Thread: "Part 2" albums

    "Part 2" albums

Name instances where an artist gave an album the same title as a previous album but adding "Part 2" or "II". Are there any instances where "II" is better than the original? Off the top of my head...

Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands
    Neal Morse - Testimony

Neither Tull nor Rhapsody eclipsed their first album with their "II". I haven't heard Testimony 2 yet to compare that one.
You say Mega Ultra Deluxe Special Limited Edition Extended Autographed 5-LP, 3-CD, 4-DVD, 2-BlueRay, 4-Cassette, five 8-Track, MP4 Download plus Demos, Outtakes, Booklet, T-Shirt and Guitar Pick Gold-Leafed Box Set Version like it's a bad thing...

Eloy - Ocean and Ocean 2. Imho, Oceans 2 is a really strong album but does not eclipse the original.

King Diamond did Abigail II: The Revenge.
I haven't listened to it in many years, but anything after the amazing run of Abigail-Them-Conspiracy
    would pale in comparison. IMO

I happen to be listening to the first Shamblemaths album, but many people said Shamblemaths 2 was better than Shamblemaths.

ELP: Works Vol. 1 & Works Vol. 2 (a/k/a Dumb and Dumber)

Klaus Schulze: Body Love & Body Love 2
    Gong: Expresso & Expresso 2

    Zappa's Joe's Garage Acts 2 & 3 was better than Act 1.

Of course in UK, Gong's Expresso was called Gazeuse! - which always makes Expresso 2 sound odd.
The Kinks did two albums of Preservation.

We should distinguish between I and II albums released concurrently or serially (GNR Use Your Illusion, Zappa Joe's Garage) from II's that were released far later, often in an attempt to revive fading careers.

Regarding the latter, Mike Oldfield's TB2 and Meat Loaf's BooH 2 were hugely successful commercially. TB2 is actually a very good album IMHO. I think the key is that the artist has to really re-create the feel of the original album not just re-use the title or the "story". That is why TAAB2 sucked so badly. Not that it is a terrible album, but musically it has nothing to do with the original prog masterpiece. It's a singer-songwriter album fer chrissakes!

A few I have not seen mentioned. Of these the Imaginos albums were the only ones that got better IMO.

    Queensryche – Operation Mindcrime 1 & 2
    Meatloaf – Bat Out Of Hell 1, 2 & 3
    Albert Bouchard – Imaginos 1, 2, & 3

I put those two about equal. They are both very good.

Not sure if that counts since they were compilation albums. There are quite a few examples of Greatest Hits Vol 1, 2......etc.

    Tangerine Dream and Edgar Froese:
    Phaedra/Phaedra 2005
    Tangram/Tangram 2008
    Hyperborea/Hyperborea 2008
Epsilon in Malaysian Pale/Epsilon in Malaysian Pale 2005

I know they're considered travesties by some fans, but I've never actually heard the remakes.

Speaking of Neil Young, he did "Harvest Moon" as a sequel to "Harvest".

Big Big Train's "English Electric" Part One and Part Two.

Tough to choose between them. Of course then they were combined, with added material, into "English Electric: Full Power" so we don't have to.
