    Tony Williams Lifetime 1970

“Some 30 seconds of the band's "Beat-Club" footage were actually shown in episode 61 with John McLaughlin stopping in mid-play rolling his eyes and the band discontinuing the track, followed by Uschi Nerke telling the viewers this: "Lifetime have behaved so badly and arrogantly in the studio that the work didn't lead to any presentable results and had to be cancelled."
It's great that now - 53 years later - we have eventually the chance to watch something from that "infamous" half-hour session recorded on November 24, 1970 . . . “

"Fragment from an aborted Tony Williams Lifetime Beat Club session from 1970. As the host Uschi Nerke says, Lifetime (along with another band which was supposed to appear on the program) had behaved so rudely and arrogantly that they were cancelled at the last moment. Apparently, the producer wanted Lifetime to stop and start each song, but they were going for the Miles Davis style of merging songs together and had not rehearsed them separately, so they refused. As a result, the producer cancelled their appearance. Since the rehearsal set was obviously filmed, it's very likely that the whole footage is sill stored in the Beat Club archive. Still, this snippet is of major historical importance as it is probably the only video document of this incredible, revolutionary band."

I'm subscribed to beatclub on YT so nearly had kittens when this popped up yesterday afternoon. As close to Holy grail as you get I think. All we need now is the '76 Yes concert movie....

What a find! I saw this band in 1970, at the Birmingham Palladium, in suburban Detroit, with the Mecki-Mark Men opening. I was astonished. For one, I had never heard of John McLaughlin, and did not know what to expect from the skinny short-haired guy on guitar- until he began playing. And it was loud, really loud. And Tony Williams was a drummer like I had never seen- this was before Mahavishnu and Billy Cobham. I went mainly because I knew who Jack Bruce was. I bought their first record shortly after and it remains a mainstay disc in my collection.

    Thanks for posting this!
