What surround mix did you listen today?

Yesterday I finally picked up my Blu-Ray copy of Luck And Strange, the new album by David Gilmour. Although I don't have a Dolby Atmos-system, the Blu-Ray-player transfers the music perfectly in a surround mix. The compositions have a lot of details which are heard wonderful in all speakers. Lovely bluesy music by the guitar-master I'm in the camp that admires it Gilmour doesn't sound too much like Pink Floyd on his solo-recordings.

Yesterday I listened to the new live-album from Tears For Fears, Songs For A Nervous Planet. The Blu-Ray includes Dolby Atmos, 5.1 surround (by Steven Wilson) and stereo-mixes (by TFF-producer Charlton Pettus). The first four tracks are new studio-recordings after which the concert starts. A lot of live-surround mixes have the public in the back-speakers and the music in the front speakers, but on this one the music comes from all speakers, which is a real joy to listen to. I was a TFF-fan from the early two albums (bought them when they were released) and have less with their Beatles-influenced albums that came after that, but I can enjoy this concert during which 18 tracks from their whole discography are being played.

Wasn't sure whether this was going to be just a novelty but I was royally impressed, particularly with the vocals. Beatle harmonies, always great, sounded spectacular on this.

I think ITCOTCK has to be next up.

Enjoyed the Crimson debut but somewhat underwhelmed by ELPs Trilogy in 5.1.

Am I right that the earlier Brain Salad Surgery from early 2000s is the best surround option for that album?

I'm told that the next two Nektar remaster boxes will also feature 5.1 versions of the albums, (Journey to the Centre of the Eye, followed by A Tab In The Ocean) as well.

Then Drums And Wires by XTC, released as a CD/DVD-A in 2014 with Steven Wilson-mixes. I'm not really into this band, but admire what they do and the admiration is even greater when listening to this wonderful, playful surround-mix. Very cleaver, with vocals from all speakers and a lot of effects running from one speaker to another.
I also have the Nonsuch-set.

This week I found a very cheap copy (sealed!) of the CD/Blu-Ray-set Psurroundabout Ride by XTC as The Dukes Of Stratosphear, released in 2019 in The Surround Sound Series. This is a compilation-album containing the complete albums 25 O'Clock (1985) and Psonic Psunspot (1987) in surround -, stereo - and instrumental mixes from Steven Wilson, plus bonustracks and demo's. The psychedelic sixties-music from the Dukes contain so much details, which make this a wonderful 5.1-experience!

I played Bruford's One Of A Kind, the Jakko Jakszyk 5.1 mix that came in the boxset Seems Like A Lifetime Ago, although it's also available seperate.

Great album, but I still have some trouble listening to this mix. Jakko made some strange choices, which make it all a bit unbalanced at times. In some cases he starts a Holdsworth-solo left-behind to continue it in the front-left speaker. I guess it would have been better to mix this album without to many surround-tricks. I must say though that the mix sounds better when you play it loud. When I played it softer it sounded even weirder.

Been revisiting the Camel Air Born Box surround discs, as much as I like the stereo remasters I don't think the surround versions of the 5 albums included adds much.

They are nicely done and spaced but not as "different" as I'd like them to be.

Played the first 4 albums and found no real "wow" moments where it is used to great effect, I had high hopes for Moonmadness, but I think Snow Goose is better from that perspective surround wise.

I have the box but had not listened to those yet. I was hoping for great things from Moonmadness.

It can be a fine line between really utilising the format and going over the top. Or just not doing enough..

I only have Remain In Light, which I enjoy quiet a lot. It's actually the only Talking Heads-album I have though.

Haven't bought this set, but heard very good reviews on the surround mixes. I guess it's a personal thing then. But yes, my friends were especially very content with the surround mix of The Snow Goose.

I'll give a MAJOR thumbs up to the 4th BluRay disc, those 70s videos from the BBC, (74 and Sight and Sound 77) have been around in various bootlegs and releases but they look and sound great here.

Who did the Surround mixes for Camel?
They are one of my favorites but I have not been able to spring for many of the cool Camel products like Surround versions.
