Reaction Videos Are Not The End Of The World

I've read take after take about why reaction videos on YouTube are bad for the artist, fake, and whatever other horror they visit on the world. I made the mistake of watching a guy pontificate about the subject for an hour when he could've just done a tl:dr version in five minutes. But I get it - he's complaining about people who monetize someone else's work the way he monetizes blathering for an hour longer than he needs to. It's all about making a buck - I get that.

Here's my reality about them: They're entertaining. Period. I go on YouTube to mostly be entertained and occasionally informed about some political topic. However, it's all entertainment. Every damned bit of it. More importantly, I'm the customer - the end-user. I don't care about the blood, toil or sweat that went into anything, I just want to be entertained. Dance, ballerina, dance. If watching some lousy reaction video is my equivalent of watching pro wrestling then so be it. Yeah, it's fake. Some guy in his 40s has never heard of The Beatles - OK, I'll go with that. "Tribesmen" have never heard of fast food - whatever. Will I be entertained by the BS? That's what's important.

Look, I'm watching a cute woman react to Yes - that's about it. I'm watching some classical musician act all wacky like she just discovered that air exists. OK, whatever. Just entertain me.

Yeah, what you’re saying makes sense. I don’t have disdain for reaction videos, even if some of them are probably fake. Like you said, it’s for entertainment. That’s what I mostly watch YouTube for also.

Was it necessary to post this rant here instead of on YouTube? Why not complain directly to the guy who wasted an hour of your time?

We all have our empty calories entertainment preferences that others can’t stand. I think reaction videos are a small slice of a larger pie of absolutely useless content that I think is a complete waste of energy and bandwidth. But who cares? You like them. Who cares?

Reaction videos are all not created equal. There are some like Daily Doug, Andy & Alex, and a few others that I watch and enjoy quite a bit.

I can't say I care much for reaction videos. Don't think I ever watched them. I watch music videos, synthesizer demonstrations, or short documentaries about certain songs mostly.

You could do a reaction video of the guy's video.

Reaction video's can be entertaining and potentially informative at times.
    A recommendation:
I've enjoyed the Daily Doug - check out his reaction to the Atom Heart Mother suite which I found funny (Early on he wonders whether he's loaded up the right track and later thinks his player is malfunctioning!). After that try Several Species of Small Furry Animals.

I just love them. In particular, Critical Reactions and Daily Doug, but many more.

Here is their takes on Magma, neither of which I completely agree with, but enjoy the hell out of:

    Critical Reactions (with Bryan):

    And Daily Doug:

Nah, dude, he's a lot of fun and he covers a lot of ground musically- this is good since he introduces people to music they may not be aware of. It's all good.

I've seen a couple reaction videos of Hip Hop dudes reviewing Metallica and Pantera. Lol

In the grand scheme of things, nothing is necessary. If I broke a rule then the mods can delete the post or whatever. If not, then it stands.

Daily Doug got on my nerves the couple of times I watched his videos, especially his propensity of punctuating every other sentence with a forced, "Y'all". I'm sure he's educated in music theory and he says he's a classical composer but when I went to his channel page, the links to his original compositions but I would need to pay to hear them - maybe next time.

There's an opera singer/vocal coach that does these reaction videos too. She has at least linked to some of her performances, including a performance done in Elvish(?), Elvan(?) but such vocal oddities elude me.

I don't believe 90% of these videos but oh well, it's easy to scroll on past.

Love the Prog ones where the walls behind are displaying some rock posters, and there's a guitar or two and some vinyl leaning up against the wall.
They do a reaction to Roundabout having apparently never heard any Yes before and they're blown away by it, almost speechless at first. "What the hell did I just listen to? This might be the greatest thing I've ever heard!!"
A year later they're reacting to Heart of the Sunrise for the first time. Yeah, f*** off!

Probably The Charismatic Voice, Elizabeth Zharoff. She's a lot of fun, mixing lots of metal in with all sorts of stuff. She does do some cosplay and does do elvish stuff-ish.

Here she is with another singing coach reaction youtuber, Julia Nilon, who is nearly done with her PhD.

Agree, she is one of the better ones. I watch her from time to time.

Yeah, they're probably mostly fake but if people need their artistic tastes validated in this way... I understand.

Daily Doug does the kind of kayfabe I find funny - acting like every note he's hearing is an absolutely mind-blowing amazement.

I get what you are saying with Doug, although I do like a lot of his videos. Have you ever watched Andy & Alex? Two young college students / musicians from Florida. I think their reactions are authentic and have been a subscriber for a couple of years now.

If I think it's an over-the-top act, so what. I just think it's funny. No harm done. Earth abides.
