    Avant-prog binge 2023

    New year, new binge, eh?

Well anyway, my favourite new avant-prog albums of the year 2022 were:

    • Black Midi: Hellfire
    • 5uu’s: Quiet in Your Bones, The
    • Cheer-Accident: Here Comes The Sunset
    • Magma: Kãrtëhl
    • Miriodor: Elements
    • October Equus: Noches blancas, luces rojas

In the category of extended avantish family these were also great:

    • Mary Halvorson: Amyryllis
    • Mary Halvorson: Belladonna
    • Caroline Shaw: Evergreen

Most eagerly awaited new album of the 2023: PoiL Ueda.

Yup. Really looking forward to that one.

I saw that Lost Crowns are doing some live dates in the UK. Maybe a new album coming up? Anyone knows?

I did miserably badly last year in terms of listening to or buying new music. This year I must do better!

Let's make a start. There's a new album out from The Canyon Observer that I think will be of interest to some here:

Extreme metal is the starting point, but with the usual instrumentation supplemented by having two drummers, two sax, and two cellos. Post-rock and jazz in the mix. Whilst this kind of cross-pollination is far from a new thing, the results here are pretty striking. I dig.

I don't think my brain could cope with a full on avant-prog binge, but I have just listened to Cluster 71 twice which deserves some sort of badge I would have thought.

    Today i revisited this album:

    https://troissoeur.bandcamp.com/album/troissoeur-2020

Its a reunion album of the band Joris Vanvinckenroye played in with his brothers before he formed Aranis.

Pretty good and powerfull stuff that apparently stayed a bit under the radar since it has only 2 buyers on bc. The short tour they planned also had to be cancelled due to covid. Check it out, its good!

Ah. I've barely even started with the topic from last year. Today I had a first listen to the album BAHAMUT by Don Bolo and what a cracker it is!

I get the feeling I'm going to continue to get lots of good suggestions here.

I finally got hold of a re-release of Shub-Niggurath's debut/demo called Introduction (2009, originally issued cassette only in 1982). I hadn't heard the whole album before except in passing on YouTube so it's nice to finally get a proper listen to it. The building blocks of Les Morts Vont Vite are already surprisingly well in place on this album. Vocalist Ann Stewart's role is much smaller than on Les Morts Vont Vite, though. A nice listen despite the harsh sounds (saved by Udi Koomran's high quality remastering!).

Other avanty albums I've listened to this week:

    Thinking Plague : Moonsongs (US, 1986) ****+
    Scherzoo : 04 (FR, 2018) ***½
News From Babel : Letters Home (UK, 1986) ****
    Cheer-Accident : Fades (US, 2018) ****½
    Mary Halvorson : Belladonna (US, 2022) ****½
Mary Halvorson Octet: Away With You (US, 2016)
    Cassiber : Perfect Worlds (DE/UK, 1986) ****

That one seems a lot more straight thrash metal than Bahamut. Think I'll pass on that whereas I'll be buying Bahamut

Tend to agree, though based only on a very quick listen.

My favorite avant-prog release from past year is this one, which probably went unnoticed by too many: https://extralife.bandcamp.com/album...ar-works-vol-2

Desde mi Privilegio sounds like thrash black metal. A far cry from Bahamut and not an album I’ll buy or listen to again.

Gave this another listen yesterday as I'd been struggling with the vocals. Started to click with me so I will probably buy it.

I only just got around to buying & listening to this:

Live, no-overdubs 2005 recording of one of my fave FL lineups (Weas, Ed Rodriguez, Mick Barr, Mike Green) blasting through some of their rehearsal-intensive material. It's quite something to hear the precision and fury with which they tackle the likes of 'The Elimination of Incompetence'...in front of what sounds like an audience of ten people. A good one (and there is also a DVD).

My avantish binge of the week:

    The Muffins : Baker's Dozen, CD 4 (US, 1977/2022)
Eclectic Maybe Band : Again Alors? (BE, 2022) ****
    The Muffins : Baker's Dozen, CD 3 (US, 1976/2022)
Henry Threadgill Sextet : You Know The Number (US, 1986) ***½
Mikko Sarvanne Garden: Heräämisen valkea myrsky (FI, 2022) ****-
Magma : Mythes Et Legendes Volume 4 dvd (FR, 2005/2008) ****+
    The Muffins : Baker's Dozen, CD 2 (US, 1975/1976/2022)
    Ur Kaos : s/t (SE, 1987) ***½
    Ashenspire: Hostile Architecture (UK, 2022)
The Muffins: Baker's Dozen, CD 1 (US, 1975/2022)
    Magma : Kãrtëhl (FR, 2022) ****+
Širom: Utekočinjeni prestol preprostih (SI, 2022)
Skeleton Crew : The Country Of Blinds (UK, 1986) ****+
Heiner Goebbels & Alfred Harth : Vom Sprengen des Gartens (DE, 1979) ***½
    Cassiber : Perfect Worlds (UK, 1986) ****+

As you can see, I finally got my hands on The Muffins box. I'm going to digest the contents slowly and focus on the first four albums at first. Sounds nice for now. Lots of improvisation! However, I have to admit again that The Muffins are not among my biggest avant-prog favourites. But apparently I'm a big enough fan to pay 220 euros for a box set...

Again Alors? would definitely have been in my top 20 of 2022, but I forgot about it. I did listen to it for the first time when it first came out on Bandcamp, but only now have I rediscovered it.

Btw. Here is my review of Magma's Kãrtëhl:

Emmet Elvin - Being of Sound Mind. I believe ex Guapo etc member's latest effort belongs here. Kind of a blend of Zappaesque themes with post-punk aesthetics and a Cardiacs touch. Which doesn't say much, since the music is quite original.

I'm in the middle of an Avant binge myself trying to expand my "best of" Avant list and I have "Introduction" coming up for a spin.
I wanted to thank Ian for bringing up that band from Chile Asceta who released a beauty in 2022 probably my fav Avant from last year.
Also listening right now to Fred Frith's COSA BRAVA album "The Letter" and I mention it because it's not often I'm moved when listening to Avant but that song "Common Sense" does that trick. Great stuff!
