King Crimson-"Global Schizoid Launch" for Kc Documentary

    From DGM.com-

Today DGM Ltd is delighted to announce the public launch of the highly anticipated documentary ‘In the Court of the Crimson King, King Crimson at 50,’ directed by Toby Amies (The Man Whose Mind Exploded).

King Crimson have always pioneered their own uncompromisingly independent route, and this documentary, 4 years in the making, has followed the same path. In a carefully choreographed global event, the movie will be available for One Day Only in select independent cinemas worldwide on Wednesday 19th October, with a specially filmed introduction.

This will be followed on Saturday 22nd October by a special streamed screening in London, with live introduction by Robert Fripp and Q&A with the director and band members. The whole event and movie to be available live worldwide on the nugs.net platform and available through Video On Demand for a 24 hour period thereafter to allow for fans in different time zones around the world. A BluRay/DVD release and larger box set will follow, with never before seen live performances of the band, outrageous outtakes and hours of unreleased additional footage.

The film explores the “acute suffering” and transcendent glory experienced by current and former members of King Crimson, allowing the audience an intimate and sometimes uncomfortable insight into the musicians’ experience as they confront life and death head on in the world’s most demanding rock band. ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’ is not only a film about a group that has been creatively active for 50 years it’s also a film about music, why it matters, and the painful sacrifices artists have to make in order to create work that changes people’s lives, but with jokes.

In keeping with King Crimson’s independent, ethical, and iconoclastic approach to the music and entertainment business they have sidestepped traditional broadcast platforms in order to bring the film direct to their fans without further delay or compromise.

    . . .

"A grown-up film about working players living, dying, laughing, playing...” Robert Fripp.

The movie has played in festivals worldwide to universally positive reviews:

“…really about as good as rock documentaries get" VARIETY

“fascinating and deeply funny” THE QUIETUS

“One of the finest rock documentaries I have ever seen” NATIONAL REVIEW

“One of the complaints people have about King Crimson’s music is that it’s cerebral, rather than emotional, in nature. Despite that argument, In the Court of the Crimson King exposes the music’s heart” THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE

I looked on the website and there appears to be only one US screening which is in a theater in Allentown PA which is about an hour and a half (at least) north of where I currently live. I'll probably just do the streaming. It should be very interesting (and hopefully good) though. Unfortunately I've only seen KC twice live but this is a big deal especially if it has the potential of exposing them to a larger audience.

I'm happy that it seems they're doing what Disney ignominously failed to deliver (or care to pay for) with the Beatles' "Get Back" - put together a Bluray edition filled to the brim with bonus material that people will be happy to buy. Let's wait and see what it does include, but I'm hoping for at least the full 60-minute 'in the round' performance that was filmed especially for it, and unedited (or at least lengthy excerpts) interviews with the current members and, especially, the alumni.

    $24.99 to stream it.

Hey, Digital Man, it says they'll be adding more theaters. They seem to be dealing with independent theaters, of which there are very few in the US as far as I know (at least in the Metro NY area). I'm not holding my breath for a screening near me, so I'll probably stream it.

I was just watching a video yesterday about how the physical release of Get Back was a disappointment sales-wise. Personally, I thought that at 8 hours + it was stuffed to the brim already, but I would happily have watched more if Disney/Apple had seen fit to provide any. And as I did with Get Back, I’ll probably be content to wait for the physical release of the Crim film.

a lot closer than me, I'm in Sacramento, CA
that streaming price is a little high too, I'll probably just get the physical DVD when it comes out. Maybe it'll be a 4k Blu Ray, that would awesome!

You're right. That is a little bit high. Maybe they will show this on PBS or something. I don't see why not. I think Progday would be the only place I would walk around with a PBS KC tote bag though.

Perhaps they would have sold more if Peter Jackson hadn't gone on record saying he had hours of additional stuff he would be happy to put on a special edition Bluray if only Disney could be bothered. I don't know how much additional expense the inclusion of any bonus stuff would have represented, but Jackson is the guy who delivered over 8 hours of documentary for the price of 6, I'm sure he didn't have crazy financial demands about the bonus stuff, it's just that Disney basically told him "special edition DVDs/Blurays don't sell", which remains to be proven. I for one would buy such a special edition, and with proper marketing I'm sure millions of others would. These people are just incompetent. I'm thankful the people handling the KC doc have more sense.

I wasn't implying that the price for the streaming was too high; it's pretty much the going rate for an "upper-tier" streaming event. If they've announced the release date of the Blu-Ray before 10/22, I'll decide then if I can wait or not. That's assuming of course that there was no screening happening near me that I decide to go to, but that sort of unlikely somehow.

The hope is the physical release they tease is soon around the corner!

I think we pretty confidently know from what’s been said in various places that the physical release is expected to contain both rock and rio 2019 and the 60-mins they filmed in the round in their rehearsal space in 2018. Seems clear from press release to expect more fun on top of even that! Hopefully in time to make it into folk’s stockings for the holidays!

I’ll be purchasing both the Nugs stream and the physical when released! The theatrical is on a Wednesday which isn’t great for my personal schedule…all is well though!

So Peter Jackson is streaming a film of unseen Beatles performances with King Crimson? Cool!

I'm in for the Blu-Ray of the ITCOTCK Documentary too (especially the "larger box set" with all the extras).

Sadly, the cinema nearest me has a mixture of single and double (or couch) seats and there are no single seats left. And Mrs H is not amenable to KC.

Not sure I m getting the link correct here in the U.K. but doesn’t take me through to where the KC screening is showing , just lots of unrelated film showings . Am I doing something wrong ?

All this is totally absurd and disappointing; for the one night only screening there are SIX Mexican theaters listed, ONE in USA and ZERO in Canada, how can this possibly be? It makes no sense, that means indie theaters are dead in North America it seems.

And yes, the steaming ticket price is a little too high, it is about the same for a DVD, so it's a no brainer. If they make a smart comercial move, it should be release before the highly profitable Holiday season. So this signals a very logical direction if DMG is logical at all.

I'll definitely pick up a DVD or BluRay copy. If it has the Rio footage, that would be great. I was able to catch that footage on YouTube one of the times it was posted (before it got pulled down) and the video quality was excellent. Worth seeing.

Peter Jackson mentioned having bonus material on a physical release and Disney said they weren't going to have bonus material, so that's why it went from 6 hours to 8 hours, because he included everything that would have been bonus material, instead of having it sit again unused.
He knew what he was doing.

Cha Ching - I, of course, bought the Box Set ($124 Cdn). When is the release?
