To me, no such list could be complete without (in no particular order):

    Quadrophenia -- the 'Oo
    Something/Anything? -- Todd Rundgren
The Grateful Dead, a/k/a "Skull and Roses" -- s/t, obviously
Live in New York -- Nektar
Goodby Yellow Brick Road -- Elton John
Songs in the Key of Life -- Stevie Wonder
London Calling -- The Clash (makes it into the '70s by eight days)
America Eats Its Young -- Funkadelic
Frampton Comes Alive -- more or less S/T
    The Wall -- PF
    Seconds Out -- Genesis
The Survival of Saint Joan -- Smoke Rise -- Naaah, just kidding...
    Chicago II or VII
Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.

    Didn't see:
    Zappa Roxy and Elsewhere
    Vander Graaf Vital Live
    Jane Live, Grobschnitt Solar Music
Gong Live (silver cover 73-75 recordings)
    Rory Gallagher Irish Tour
Henry Cow Concerts... Could Physical Graffity be responsible for making an apple fall on Newton's head?

    Gypsy ~ Same

    From Wiki:
The debut double album by the progressive rock band Gypsy. It was recorded at Devonshire Studios, North Hollywood, California, and released in 1970. The album was re-released in 1979 on a K-tel label named Cognito and again in 1999 on CD by Bedrock Records. "Gypsy Queen" is the band's only charted single, peaking at #64. The album peaked at #44 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts in 1970...

I'll avoid the live albums (even the prtial live ones like Mooflower or Umma) or compilations, as there are too many to list, but will include the 60's, if only for the joy of listing Ladyland

    JHE - Electric Ladyland
    Miles - Bitches Brew
Out Of Focus - Four Letter Monday Afternoon
    Magma - Kobaia
    Can - Tago Mago
    Soft Machine - 3rd
    Focus - III
    Chicago Transit Authority
    Chicago - VII
    Chilliwack - II
    Quadrophenia
    Zeit
    The Lamb
    London Calling
    Amon Duul II - Yeti
    Harmonium - L'heptade

    To a (much) lesser extent:
    The Wall
    Tommy
    Chicago 2 & 3
    Tanz Der Lemming
    Wigwam - Fairyport
    Grobschnitt - Ballermann
Warm Dust - And it Came to Pass
Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity
    Aphrodite's Child - 666
    Works I & TFTO
    White Album
    Goodbye Yellow brick road
    Exile on Main St
    Physical Graffiti

I guess I forgot about Of 76 was a double
SW is indeed Johnny's best with And and JDWIII, but worthy of the best double album?

Surprised I haven't seen ELO's Out Of The Blue mentioned

I mentioned it. One of the first albums I bought (in the early 80's, there was still an original United Artists pressing hanging around at the store, maybe a cutout. It didn't have the poster though.)

Most of the ones I thought of have been mentioned, but how about a dark horse -

Out Of Focus – Four Letter Monday Afternoon (I always liked that one personally).

...and I'll cheat with one more: Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts (as originally conceived). ;-)

Offcourse there were quite a few double or even triple Live albums,
But what about the studio albums ?

Here is my list with my favorite bands and there take on a multiple vinyl albums.

Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans.
The greatest album ever made... Maybe. A real concept album on 4 20 minute long sides.

Genesis - The Lamb lies down on Broadway
The story of Rael. Great music, best Genesis album... Maybe. Took me a while to get in
(but that's 48 years ago), but what a lot of great music.

    Mike Oldfield - Incantations.
Best album of 1978 and certainly in my top 5. Very cohesive album, with great emotional stuff.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Works, Vol 1.
There best album?... Nope, I like BSS better. A strange album and not really a 'double album',
    more 4 One-Side albums.

    Canarios - Cyclos.
Best Spanish album.. certainly! A great rendition on the Four Seasons, but so much more.
Great dense album with fantastic playing. Why didn't they continu.

That's (almost) it on the proggy side for me. There aren't many more I have, but they are not
in my toplist (War of the Worlds, L'heptade, The Wall, and you will probably add a lot to the list).

Finishing this part I must not forget
    Rick Wakeman - Rhapsodies
OK, I like it for the most part, well maybe 40-50 minutes, so not really a double album for me.

To continue, there were many great live albums. I won't list them all but honourable mention goes
to Renaissance - Live at the Carnegie Hall and Gentle Giant - Playing the Fool.
Can't finish without naming the two triple albums which got me going into prog: Yes-Yessongs and ELP-Welcome my Friends.

Now for something different, what about the 'Electronics' albums (Berlin Schule and more).
Here the live albums are often just improvs or prepared new stuff (TD), so I will take some in account.
For me, in the seventies, we have

    Tangerine Dream - Encore
Great semi Live album, with TD at their best. 4 long tracks full of lot's of sequencers

(TD also dit 'Zeit' as a double album, but not that great..)

    The Maestro Klaus Schulze
X, Maybe his best album... Maybe, but there are so many great albums... 120 Minutes full of mind blowing Synth work.

Live, Yes it is Live and mostly from 1979. Sides 1 and 3 are great tracks from 1979 tour, don't like Side four.
The highlight is on Side 2, 'Sense' the greatest live track ever made. Wow what an album and it only gets 3.04 stars on Progarchives.

(KS also dit 'Cyborg' as a double album, but not that great..)

Am I forgetting something? Off course I am!
Can't argue with most of this TD's Zeit is great if you're in the mood for it. And I would add Chicago's CTA, II, VII

  14. #39
Quite possible Zeit is the TD album I'd keep if I could only have one.

If only for studio double albums, my TOP 10 (not necessarily in order):

    - ELO / Out of the Blue
    - Elton John / Goodbye Yellow brick road
    - Jesus Christ Superstar/ Rock stars version
    - Yes / Tales from Topographic Oceans
    - GENESIS - The Lamb Lies down on Broadway
    - Chicago (2 Silver cover)
    - Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St
    - The WHO - Quadrophenia
    - LED ZEPPELIN - Physical Graffiti
    - PINK FLOYD - The Wall (still 1979)

BUT it was mostly the LIVE double albums that for me made a huge mark (again, 10 not necessarily in order):

    - KANSAS - Two for the Show
    - LED ZEPPELIN - The song remains the same
    - QUEEN - Live Killers
    - GENTLE GIANT - Playing the Fool Live
    - URIAH HEEP - Live
    - DEEP PURPLE - Made in Japan
    - YES - Yessongs (triple)
    - EMERSON LAKE & PALMER - Welcome Back my Friends (triple)
    - Jethro Tull - Bursting Out
    - Genesis - Seconds Out ( my #1 Live)

During my teen years, those double albums were a major expense but I still had to get them. Now, many of all double vinyl albums have been compressed into a single CD that is not always welcomed but I prefer to have it as a double CD to preserve the original format and song order.

For more of a "dark horse" choice there was Elton's Blue Moves.

  19. #44
Rare Bird - Epic Forest (It came with a 45 size 33 disc also)

Impulse had triple albums for saxophone and drums as well. Also they had a set called Energy Essentials with early "free" classics by Coltrane, Sanders, Ayler et al.
