This is not a good idea. I could deal with one song done in this manner, like McCartney doing I've Got A Feeling on his recent tour with Lennon's rooftop concert video. Yes, it's cringeworthy, but one song is bearable. But, please, don't do the whole RAH concert in this manner. What's the point? I've got the DVD. I've watched it a couple of times (well, at least once!). I don't really want to pay a lot of money to see Keith and Greg projected on big screens with Carl and the lads accompanying.

Has a dead horse ever been so thoroughly whipped, flogged, beaten, and pummeled as the ELP catalog? I still love those old songs as much as anybody, but they’ve been recycled to the point that they’re vapor. Keeping the gravy train chugging along despite the minor inconvenience of E’s and L’s deaths is just ghoulish.

Palmer has always been known for his over-sized ego...but this is just a money-grab totally lacking in respect for Keith and Greg. I saw ELP back in the '70's and what a show it was indeed. This is NOT the "RETURN" of anything. Palmer should be ashamed of himself!!!! UGH!!!

But not that much younger. It's not even the band in their prime, fer chrissakes.

So, what do you fellow PE'ers think? A good idea whose time has come, or what?

I think that I will go and listen to the Natalie Cole/Nat King Cole posthumous rendition of "Unforgettable", with Nat somehow still present for the recording with his daughter! Yikes...

Just who the hell is this going to appeal to? My first ELP concert was in 1992 and, assuming they are doing the full Royal Albert Hall set list, I would certainly welcome seeing some of the Black Moon material performed live again. But, NOT THIS! Wow, words fail me to express how awful this looks.

    I don't have a problem with it.
Everyone is assuming the worst in Carl's motivation, and presuming it's a "cash grab" by him, only to profit financially.
The article states the estates of both Greg and Keith signed off on it, and I would hope they will in some way receive monetary compensation.
Or at least they will receive residuals from increased sales of their library of albums and songs, perhaps being introduced to a new generation of fans who never saw them.

Is it possible Carl is doing this to honor not only his former bandmates( 2 great and talented musicians), and most of all his friends.

Several folks here have gone to the Palmer shows, and wrote how great they are, so it seems Carl doesn't need to do this in order to get more butts in the seats.

I can see how people have negative feelings about this. It may very well not translate to a live stage, I just have a different opinion on why he is doing this.

Beyond curiosity about the technical process involved in synching old video/sound with live performance, the addition of Keith and Greg's images to the concert is no draw for me whatsoever. If this came to the performing arts center at the Uni where I work (not completely outside the realm of possibility) I would probably attend. Otherwise, not.

IMHO the PR blurb is terrible and borders on misrepresenting what folks will actually get (shocking though it may be, there are some folks who remember ELP from classic rock radio in the 70's who WON'T be aware that 2/3 of the band are very much dead). But in some ways it's actually very shrewd: using an existing professional recording (from a better venue, no less!) on jumbotrons rather than more elaborate/expensive holo-technology.

Continued IMHO: as a market we put great emphasis on nostalgia and brands (how many more tickets did Soft Machine Legacy sell by omitting that last word from their name?), and on average we support things that cater to what we used to love to a greater degree than we support new things (just look at the turnout for the average tribute act vs. new talent). To me, it means the ROI is probably pretty attractive: basically it's the Carl Palmer Band with added multimedia but with a vastly more "attractive" marquee. I would not be surprised if either increased ticket sales or jacked up ticket prices will be better enough that it'll generate a decent profit for all involved.

And on the upside, this will be the first and only time in the history of ELP that Greg Lake won't require the first 3-4 tour dates to "get warmed up."

Oh no, he absolutely will get more butts in seats by changing the bill from "Carl Palmer Band" to "The Return of ELP." With the former you get the subset of "true" fans who will see just him with a couple of other guys (and no keyboards). With the latter you pick up ELP fans who just want to relive those glory days even if it's slightly pretend. Plus any fans who don't realize that it's 2/3 virtual, 1/3 live.

I remember when I first heard Carl was touring as a 3 man band(last tour), and was curious who was in the band.
When I clicked on a YT video of one of his shows, I was greatly disappointed to see no keyboards, and thought to myself this is wrong, so very wrong.
But once I set that emotion to the side, and listened to the band playing, they sounded pretty damn good..NOT ELP, but Carl fronted band playing ELP music.

In reference to my "butts in the seat" comment, my thought was he doesn't need to do that, which supports my belief it's not greed motivated on his part.

I will respectfully dis-agree. I don't think it's gonna mean more asses in seats for Carl. I think it will draw the 400-600 that he usually draws.

    time will tell.
