TALKSHOW
With no disrespect towards a certain groundhog, the surest sign of spring in these parts is the start of a new season for the Baltimore LiveMusic Showcases. There are only a few shows confirmed as of yet but several others are “in the works”. First up this year is The Red Masque,
The Red Masque is a band with an interesting history as part of the Philadephia "Nu-Progressive" underground. Part art, part alchemy, the group's experimental songwriting style is both angular and eerie, accented by freeform space rock improvisations, intricate acoustics, dark atmospherics and chunky riffs. Unconventional and eccentric in musical form, their sophisticatedly sinister music fuses together such disparate references as horror movie soundtracks, rock-in-opposition, progressive rock, experimental, zeuhl, heavy rock, gothic, psychedelia, space rock, and kraut rock. This show will be part of their CD release celebration for their newest effort, "Mythalogue", on Beta-Iactam Ring Records.* About half of the album was recorded right here in Charm City, hon, at Orion Studios last spring and was mixed in France by Bob Drake.
Speaking of Mythalogue:
"Well, you couldn't class this as boring... I heard some accomplished playing and intriguing musical ideas. At one point I was reminded of Jefferson Airplane, then Stockhausen and here and there Velvet Underground with a bit of Alistair Crowley, XTC, Opeth etc, thrown into the crucible of boiling, fervent and sometimes a very scary sound." (Glenn Goring, guitars, COMUS)
In fact the cd is not set for release until next month, but the band will have advance copies at the show.* A scheduling snafu at the replication plant has slowed printing of the cd cover/booklet and delayed world-wide release, but those items will be mailed to all persons who purchase the cd.* Their label went to the extra effort to produce a 2-cd gatefold and a single-page cover with jewel case just for these shows - so they in fact are sort of collectors' items.* And talk about collectors items - the limited special art edition cd will include 50 miniature works by artist and Red Masque frontwoman Lynnette Shelly in an "artist trading card" size of 2.5x3.5 inches, titled, numbered, and signed by Ms Shelley.
This will be the band's third time here, and every time they manage to win new fans.
TALKSHOW
Talkshow is an improvisational jazz trio comprised of Zach Branch, Andrew Delclos, along with John Dierker, (cello, bassoon, and saxophone, respectively). They're part of a very active jazz and new music scene that regularly plays at The Windup Space on North Avenue here in Baltimore. I was fortunate to catch them about a month ago when they opened for Janel and Anthony and I'm really excited that they've accepted my invitation to play this Saturday!
