So sad to hear this. I hope he's able to fight it.

Damn! I wish the best possible outcome for him. He's really someone special. I know his name and cancer have been linked together in the past - - I was hoping it was just that, in the past.

yeah apparently he was in remission for a while but it looks like it's back, terrible news as I truly believe he is one of the most innovative & brilliant musicians of the modern era

here's hoping for the best possible outcome. I've been listening to his last album (async) a lot lately. it's really something special.

I guess you've seen Coda, the documentary telling the story of how that album was realized:

    I wish him well also.

I've always enjoyed his "beauty" album which while mostly very poppish blends different elements in it. I haven't heard anything else by him though.

Great news and autobuy for me! I've always been a fan of his music. Hearing about his illness is so devastating. Here's hoping that he will be winning the battle.

Announcing the new album on Instagram yesterday, November 20th, Sakamoto said after he "finally 'came home' to my new temporary housing after a big operation, I found myself reaching for the synthesiser. I had no intention of composing something; I just wanted to be showered in sound. I'll probably continue to keep this kind of diary."

    Yeah!

Here's the track Grains, performed by David Sylvian:

Love the interpretation of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by Electric Youth:

    CD Tracklist:

Lim Giong – Walker (Lim Giong Follow The Steps Remodel)
David Sylvian – Grains (Sweet Paulownia Wood) (David Sylvian Remodel)
Thundercat, Taylor Graves – Thousand Knives (Thundercat Remodel)
Electric Youth – Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (Electric Youth Remodel)
    Cornelius – Thatness And Thereness
Hildur Guđnadóttir – World Citizen – I Won’t Be Disappointed (Hildur Guđnadóttir Remodel)
Alva Noto – The Sheltering Sky (Alva Noto Remodel)
    Fennesz – Amore (Fennesz Remodel)
Devonté Hynes, Emily Schubert (2) – Choral No.1 (Devonté Hynes Remodel)
The Cinematic Orchestra – DNA (The Cinematic Orchestra Remodel)
Yoshihide Otomo – With Snow And Moonlight – Snow, Silence, Partially Sunny (Yoshihide Otomo Remodel)
Gabrial Wek – Forbidden Colours (Gabrial Wek Remodel)
404.Zero – The Revenant Main Theme (404.Zero Remodel)
    Ryuichi Sakamoto:

Singing for the first time in 10 years, David Sylvian, a longtime friend and collaborator of Ryuichi Sakamoto, recorded “Grains (Sweet Paulownia Wood)” for A TRIBUTE TO RYUICHI SAKAMOTO — To the Moon and Back.
The remodel transforms “Grains” from the 2009 album ‘Utp_’ (a collaboration between Ryuichi Sakamoto 坂本龍一 , alva noto and Ensemble Modern) into a song with all new lyrics written by Sylvian.

Sad to hear. What do you recommend by him? I used to have a Yellow Magic Orchestra album, but didn't care for the dance beats on it.

The only thing I have or heard by him is Beauty but you might not like it if you have an issue with dance/ dance beat music. I suggest listening to it on YT. I would recommend it to open minded prog fans (very open minded) though.

Sakamoto released albums as a pop-artist, like Beauty as mentioned by D.M. He also did a lot of soundtracks. My favorite is Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and its company-album Coda.
With David Byrne he also made the soundtrack for The Last Emperor. The Sheltering Sky is also a famous soundtrack, while recently he also did the score for The Revenant.
Async is one of his latest studio-albums; quite ambietesk, partly inspired by the recent tsunami.
His work with David Sylvian is also well worth mentioning (World Citizen for example).
From YMO I love Technodelic a lot.

You may want to check out Async (the one he did right after his first cancer treatments) or any of his film soundtracks. He's also done some Sakamoto plays the piano series, or Sakamoto :Playing the Orchestra. All are primarily instrumental and pretty chill stuff. His pop music stuff is pretty much a distant memory now.

Listening to his new album '12' right now. It's melancholy, understated and quite lovely.
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:
