    Your Favorite Ear-Candy Album

Sometimes when I’m having a hard time choosing what to listen to next, and I feel a little bored with everything I’ve been listening to recently, I’ll pick an old favorite “ear-candy” album. By this I mean a good album filled with interesting, little audio bits. These bits could be anything that appeals to me. They could be instrumental, vocal, sound effects, solos (as long as there are a lot of them) - whatever is most instantly and mindlessly appealing. Often they’re what Geddy Lee referred to in an interview as “events." Cool things that happen in the songs. Rush is a band I often turn to in these instances. This could kind of overlap with “comfort prog,” but so what? Also, doesn't really need to be your favorite, just a favorite. I'm hoping to get some good suggestions from this.

I’ll go first, with an album I just pulled out that I haven’t listened to in a LONG time, but it always hit the spot:

    The Bears - s/t

Ear-Candy Attributes: great harmony vocals, tons of cool guitar sounds)
(I guess this should have been in off-topic - sorry!)

I’d reach for Zappa’s “The Lost Episodes.” It may be lacking in specified ear-candy attributes, but is comprised of a wide variety of cool events.

Gotye? "Making Mirrors" and "Like Drawing Blood" both have 'samples' of sounds or rhythms from old sources incorporated into the songs from those albums.
"State of the Art" is a favorite
"Normal is just the average of extremes" - Gary Lessor

OP: Great choice, but I'll go with Lone Rhino.

Yep, that's a good one. Young Lions also.

I'll also mention the Tubes. Their very underrated Love Bomb fits the description but so do some of their others like Remote Control, Outside Inside and the Completion Backward Principal.

Another one not mentioned yet is the Moody Blues. The classic period but also some of their eighties stuff but especially LDV.

Many critics who loved Steely Dan characterized their sound as "ear candy" for adult listeners. I look at albums such as "Aja", "Katy Lied" and "Gaucho" as pure examples of what could be described as such.

Lots to choose from with XTC. I chose Black Sea the other day using this measure.

Principle, but, yeah, that's a great album. But if I was going to pick a Tubes album (who are an excellent choice for "ear candy") I'd go with one of the first two, probably the first one.

In fact, that's my choice today.

    The Beatles - Abbey Road
Extreme - III Sides To Every Story

(but this is kind of a weird question....90% of what I listen to is an attempt to consume some ear candy)

I'm a big Patrick Gleeson fan. After 42 years this is finally being issued on CD at the end of the month.

Yeah, that's probably true for most of us! Well, "Comfort-Prog Ear-Candy." Easy to consume!

This is one of THE best sounding discs I have ever owned - but as I understood "ear candy" - I would not have included this.

RW - Amused to Death + total ear candy
