If you can only make one cd with your favorite music throughout the years

So max 80 minutes of the music that will feel like a soundtrack to your life. Not only prog but whatever style.

Not an easy thing I know. It took me ages to compile mine. I had to go through my collection without mercy and with the knowledge that there will be no space for some of the songs that mean the most to me, simply because they are too long to include on a compilation were every band and solo artist is urging me to give them some of those 80 minutes.

How would yours look like? Looking forward to see them :-)

    Here is my list.

    1. Bo Hansson: Fog on the Barrow-Downs (from "Lord of the Rings" 1970)
    2. Yes: Long Distance Runaround (from "Fragile" 1971)
    3. Emerson, Lake & Palmer: From the Beginning (from "Trilogy" 1972)
    4. Black Sabbath: Who are You? (from "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" 1973)
    5. Gandalf: Alone Again (from "Gallery of Dreams" 1992)
    6. Rainbow: Sixteenth Century Greensleeves (from "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" 1975)
    7. Renaissance: Kalynda (A Magical Isle) (from "Azur D' Or" 1971)
    8. Uriah Heep: Sunrise (from "the Magician's Birthday" 1972)
    9. Jethro Tull: Coronach (from "20 years of Jethro Tull" 1988)
    10. Kansas: Can I Tell You (from "Kansas" 1974)
    11. Camel: Harbour of Tears (from "Harbour of Tears" 1996)
    12. Dio: Don’t Talk to Strangers (from "Holy Diver" 1983)
    13. Love: Andmoreagain (from "Forever Changes" 1967)
    14. Rory Gallagher: Tattoo’d Lady (from "Tattoo" 1973)
    15. Fairport Convention: Crazy Man Michael (from "Liege and Lief" 1969)
    16. Yngwie Malmsteen: Rising Force (from "Odyssey" 1988)
    17. Stratovarius: Speed of Light (from "Episode" 1996)
    18. Immortal: Blashyrk (Mighty Ravendark) (from "Battles in the North" 1995)
    19. Górecki: Concerto for Harpsichord and String Orchestra (from "Harpsichord Concerto" 1995)
    20. Wolves in the Throne Room: Mother Owl, Father Ocean (from "Thrice Woven" 2017)
    21. King Crimson: Starless (first four minutes) (from "Red" 1974)

Very tough; I also had to omit most lengthy tracks. I'm not at all satisfied with this, but just for fun, here's 80 minutes:

The Smiths - That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore
Simon and Garfunkel - The Boxer
Kate Bush - Jig Of Life
Area - La Mela Di Odessa (1920)
    Genesis - Entangled
Miles Davis (2nd quintet) - Gingerbread Boy
    Cardiacs - Foundling
Rachel Portman - Opening Credits (The Human Stain score - but there are ten trillion pieces of film score music I could easily choose)
    Metallica - Blackened
Jethro Tull - Life Is A Long Song
    Weather Report - Unknown Soldier
Peter Hammill - This Side Of The Looking Glass
    Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
Handel - Sarabande - played by any competent orchestra... a 'classical 101' choice, but I had to keep it short (* see also: film scores)
    Änglagård - Jordrök

... I had to lop off a couple of beloved songs (Elton John - Sixty Years On and Le Orme - Rittorno Al Nulla) in order to have Änglagård on there.

(EDIT: and I completely blanked on Joan Baez's Diamonds And Rust. )

Stay tuned for my next 109,556 choices (or I could go with only 109,077 if I don't include any Zappa).

Haha I understand it's not only fun. Would have loved some Van der Graaf Generator on my list, since you mentioned Peter Hammill.

Impossible for me too. Maybe I could cut it down to 1 cd if I included 1 minute of 1 song from each band/artist that I hold dear.

This is tough, but I'm going to give it a try. It's an interesting mental exercise.

I'll come back and post in this thread once I've got a track list made.

Not even going to try. It would be pointless. I'm with Mark.

Interesting thought experiment, there would have to be at least 1 children's song on there to represent your first decade. Check with your parents they surely remember your favorites!

My favorite songs are already on 1 cd. Its called Sing to God.

(Okay, maybe I would replace Angleworm Angel with the Everso closely guarded line)

Since the criteria is a "soundtrack for your life", I picked shorter songs by prog bands and I basically picked one song by each band that introduced me to a new sound or style and expanded my listening into new directions. I also went from the 60's through the 90's and stopped there because I had already accumulated around 80 minutes. From the late 90's onward would have to be a separate disc....

The Monkees - The Girl I Knew Somewhere
Chicago - Make Me Smile (radio edit)
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick (radio edit)
Yes - Heart of the Sunrise
Humble Pie - Hot n' Nasty
Horslips - Wrath of the Rain
    Angel - Tower
Be Bop Deluxe - Crystal Gazing
Dave Edmunds - The Trouble Boys
    Elvis Costello - Lipstick Vogue
    Raven - Take Control
    Manowar - Manowar
    Helstar - Toward the Unknown
Steeleye Span - Thomas the Rhymer
Mississippi Fred McDowell - Shake 'em on Down
RL Burnside - When My First Wife Left Me
    Dave Hole - Workin' Overtime
You say Mega Ultra Deluxe Special Limited Edition Extended Autographed 5-LP, 3-CD, 4-DVD, 2-BlueRay, 4-Cassette, five 8-Track, MP4 Download plus Demos, Outtakes, Booklet, T-Shirt and Guitar Pick Gold-Leafed Box Set Version like it's a bad thing...

H'mmm. Pikers. One CD? I'll fill it with MP3s, get hours out of it...

Not even a double CD, tough rules. Interesting, but I have to think on this a bit.

I considered to make a 2 CD set for a while, so I didn’t have to kick out some of my beloved bands, but it felt like cheating. Before you know you will end up with a boxset of 26 CDs ;-)

Lots of good choices in your list, but I wanted to single this one out because I feel it's a real overlooked gem in Pete's catalog. Love this tune (and the reworked version from Shaking the Tree)

Thanks. Probably spend too much time making the list but it was fun to do. Security is one of my all-time favorite albums which makes it his best in my book. Mr Perfection, I mean Peter Gabriel, polished the notes to well, perfection. Love the drum sound he has on this album, and his lyrics are as always excellent.

I'm still working on my list...

Security is an excellent record, and on some days it might be my favorite PG album overall. So is brilliant though, so it's hard for me to choose. I agree about the drums and lyrics too. Fantastic stuff.
