    Your Song Count by Artist

After trying without much luck a number of MP3 apps for windows I finally settled on good ole Windows Media Player. Sure it's a no frills app, but it gets the job done.

One thing I noticed as I was playing with sorting my library was that the app displays the number of songs I have by artist. Here are my top artists/composers by song count:

Note - I have 24 Various Artist albums accounting for 606 songs and 6 Original Soundtrack albums accounting for 100 songs, those are not included in the list. I've removed film score composers as they skew the results due to cue lengths, but of those Jerry Goldsmith is tops with 204 songs.

    1. Dream Theater - 109 songs
    2. Ayreon - 108 songs
    2. The Flower Kings - 108 songs
    4. Danny Elfman - 99 songs
    4. Spock's Beard - 99 songs
    6. Pain of Salvation - 98 songs
    7. Sigh - 95 songs
    8. Akercocke - 93 songs
    9. Opeth - 87 songs
    10. Between the Buried and Me - 86 songs
    11. Evergrey - 83 songs
    11. Solefald - 83 songs
    13. Yes - 80 songs
    14. Brave Combo - 76 songs
    14. Mastodon - 76 songs
    16. The Mars Volta - 75 songs
    17. Gojira - 73 songs
    18. Estradasphere - 69 songs

then a huge bunch at 66 songs, including ELO, Riverside, Symphony X, Scar Symmetry and System of a Down.

    Fun exercise.

Big fan of MediaMonkey both on my laptop (Windows) and phone (Android). Handles very large collections really well.

To that end, I didn't do an exhaustive search across my entire library, but picked a couple that I figured would be near the top.

    Tangerine Dream: 2051
    King Crimson: 1848
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

I had Media Monkey for years but wasn't satisfied with the formatting for ripped files. Surprisingly WMP seems to be doing the trick, so far.

    1. Beatles - 2312...
How is that even possible? That's an average of 10 versions of each song they ever recorded.

I used WMP as my primary library/player for years without issue so no eyerolling from me And when it comes to ripping, I still use WMP.

There was a "breaking point" with WMP once my collection got sufficiently large, where newly added albums caused other albums/metadata to disappear. MediaMonkey has been much more stable for me (although the Android version has some irritating bugs).

Beach Boys, nice. If I had done this 35 years ago, ELO would've been in my top, but I am only now rebuilding my appreciation and collection of them.

I don't have itunes or similar anymore (and if I ever do get something like this again it's going to be hell to reload all of my albums), but if I had to guess my most popular artist would probably be John Zorn. (Zappa and KC would be my guess for the next two)

Sorry to inject speculation into a field of data. :P

I don’t collect songs. I do collect albums, but for non mobile listening, it’s always physical media. Way better sound! Of course I’m 65, but I do uses Amazon Music Unlimited and with that app, I have close to 200,000 songs!
    So much music....so little time....

I have now started to play by artist each time I sit at the computer for work. It's cool to shuffle through an artist in your collection, find long lost gems, hear patterns, and keep a variety without pure shuffle.

The best one so far is VA of which I have 600 songs ranging from Gregorian Chanting to Spirituals to Broadway Musical to Film Scores to Hip-Hop to Avant-garde to Metal to just about everything else, except New Country, the one Genre to be found nowhere in my collection, whew.
