After trying without much luck a number of MP3 apps for windows I finally settled on good ole Windows Media Player. Sure it's a no frills app, but it gets the job done.
One thing I noticed as I was playing with sorting my library was that the app displays the number of songs I have by artist. Here are my top artists/composers by song count:
Note - I have 24 Various Artist albums accounting for 606 songs and 6 Original Soundtrack albums accounting for 100 songs, those are not included in the list. I've removed film score composers as they skew the results due to cue lengths, but of those Jerry Goldsmith is tops with 204 songs.
1. Dream Theater - 109 songs
2. Ayreon - 108 songs
2. The Flower Kings - 108 songs
4. Danny Elfman - 99 songs
4. Spock's Beard - 99 songs
6. Pain of Salvation - 98 songs
7. Sigh - 95 songs
8. Akercocke - 93 songs
9. Opeth - 87 songs
10. Between the Buried and Me - 86 songs
11. Evergrey - 83 songs
11. Solefald - 83 songs
13. Yes - 80 songs
14. Brave Combo - 76 songs
14. Mastodon - 76 songs
16. The Mars Volta - 75 songs
17. Gojira - 73 songs
18. Estradasphere - 69 songs
then a huge bunch at 66 songs, including ELO, Riverside, Symphony X, Scar Symmetry and System of a Down.
Fun exercise.
