Manticore Records Relaunching Under the Auspices of Regina Lake

Manticore Records Relaunching Under the Auspices of Regina Lake, Widow of Legendary Greg Lake

    A personal statement from Regina

It was always Greg's wish to reinstate the Manticore Records Label.
Greg's idea, in his own words, was to give new, talented musicians the chance to be heard, when other doors might have been closed to them for being different.
Greg was once one such young Musician.
He had put everything in place for Manticore Records to start up again, but as we know, it wasn’t possible for Greg to be there to realise his vision.

Just a few days before Greg died, he asked me if I would like to carry on with Manticore Records, after he had gone?
Greg had already put everything into my name, ready for me to take his place.
He said it was entirely up to me.
If I wasn’t tempted to take it on, I could just let it go.
I told him, as I am sentimental about Manticore, having been there in the early days, I would give it my best, with a lot of help from my friends and advisers, including Greg’s long term manager Stewart Young, and Martin Darvill, co-manager since 2008..

On reflection I would like this label to be devoted to Greg Lake Music and Songs to keep his legacy alive for us all in years to come.

    – Regina Lake

The first project will be a definitive collection of Greg Lake’s solo catalogue. Also, watch a rare video of Greg singing “I believe in Father Christmas” live premiering soon here: https://youtu.be/zP33z3lGHyo.

Kind of a strangely worded announcement.

She says, "Greg's idea, in his own words, was to give new, talented musicians the chance to be heard, when other doors might have been closed to them for being different..." then seems to imply that she's decided the label will be devoted to releasing his solo stuff. Does this mean "exclusively devoted", or will they be doing both?

I think re-launching Manticore under the auspices of encouraging and assisting new musicians is a wonderful idea. I hope that's in the mix and becomes a priority for them, and not simply being a vanity label for Greg's solo stuff.

On the business side it makes perfect sense to begin the new record label with an artist that fans are familiar with.
This helps with exposure and a financial base to move forward.
If it proves financially viable, then I'm sure they will try to fulfill Greg's wish by signing new artists.

This is a huge task in my opinion, due to the way the music biz operates, the way people buy music, etc

That makes sense, and I hope this is the case. It's just the way she worded it seemed like she was going in a totally different direction.

No doubt about it. It think having the name "Manticore" will carry some cache in certain circles, but making money in this business now is really difficult. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

This is an odd announcement, since the following titles have already been released in the last two-three years on Manticore:

    John Greaves Life Size

Annie Barbazza & Max Repetti Moonchild ‎
    Steve F.

    www.waysidemusic.com
    www.cuneiformrecords.com

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

“Remember, if it doesn't say "Cuneiform," it's not prog!” - THE Jed Levin

Any time any one speaks to me about any musical project, the one absolute given is "it will not make big money". [tip of the hat to HK]

"Death to false 'support the scene' prog!"

please add 'imo' wherever you like, to avoid offending those easily offended.

^^ bonus odd fun, searched for "John Greaves Life Size manticore records" on Google and all the pages going to Manticore's site or even FB come up "not found."
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

Also, Ephemeral Sun: it's a thing and we like making things that might be your thing: https://ephemeralsun.bandcamp.com

Oh yeah, Discogs is fine I meant all the actual pages going directly to Manticore's site or the official Manticore FB page.

Weird, right? I LOVE the stuff Annie has released. The Manticore Records youtube channel is still around, but yeah...all the official links to the recent Manticore official are gone.

    What a weird press release.

    Here is Greg's vision.
    That's nice.
Now, I am planning on changing it.
    The end.

Maybe they could relaunch the ELP catalog. There hasn't been an ELP reissue campaign since at least lunchtime.
