They are gradually being released on Bandcamp, the third one 'Rest of the World' has just been released. For a 'reformed after a long break' band they are exceptional.

I think I like Manna/Mirage even more than The Muffins. The most recent album Man Out Of Time (2021) is very very good.

This was a really nice thing said in the Hoffman forum, in response to someone asking if he should get the set:

    --------------------

Someone turned me on to them in the early '90's, which in retrospect was a pretty seminal moment in the formation of my music tastes. I was in my early 20's, so I missed the first phase of their activity as it was taking place in the 1970's. A guy I worked with let me borrow Open City, which is a retrospective of non-album tracks that knocked my socks off. I'd recommend listening to that or Manna/Mirage before you spring for the boxset. I'm all in, though, because I think they're one of the purest homegrown American musical acts, untainted by trends or market forces. Just guys living together in a house for a long stretch of time, practicing for hours every day, and playing parties in their backyard, without any real concern about going for the brass ring. I like their second period too (2000 to 2015-ish), after they'd taken a couple decades to have careers and raise families. I love them.

I suspect not. Ian was heavily involved in the tape transfers and appears to have gotten the first copy off the truck. He probably deserves it (but we can hate him anyway).

It was claude02 receiving a copy in France that had me asking. But I don't know who claude02 is - for all I know he was also involved in the band or the new set.

But I don't want to put Steve on the spot at all, I'm just asking. It seemed early to me too.

I have sent copies to the musicians and to the ‘team’ that put this together with me. That’s all that has gone out from *me*.

Copies won’t go out to regular buyers for 15 ish days.

I don’t know Claude02 and have no idea how he got it.

No worries, Claude. Nothing out of order, just some people with a bit of Box Set anxiety. Not at all your fault.

I'd only hate him if I knew he wasn't a fan, but he seems to be.
Here's a nice interview with him where he gets into the Muffins and Soft Machine a little over halfway in.

Edit: Hey, wait a minute. Maybe this was his fault!
    Let's get him!! I'll grab a torch and a pitchfork! !1!ELEVENTY!1! AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH
On second thought, maybe I should have skipped that last cup of coffee.

    Anyway, I did it.

If you are interested in hearing some of the very great work that Ian did on this set, you can now hear a bunch of things from it

You can also now buy individual discs digitally, if you like one period over another….

This looks to have been a massive job, accomplished with incredibly wonderful results. Kudos.
