Today I heard .....Senjutsu by Iron Maiden. The whole album is on Youtube. I love it. I'm gonna buy the CD. It's brilliant.

In the past, I think I always heard Abel Ganz described as "neo-prog" and that's what kept me away. But in all fairness, there is some neo-prog that I enjoy even to this day. I'm usually just a bit hesitant to approach bands in that style, probably because I got over-saturated with it in my youth.

What's your #1 Genesis album by the way?

Abel Ganz was part of that whole group of NWOBPR that went on in the 80s, and were hugely influenced by Genesis. They stated in interviews that the early releases were intentionally aping the Duke sound. Alan Reed, who was with Pallas for a long time, got his start in Abel Ganz, though he was not on the release that I linked above.

I would rate Genesis albums from the period that I care about thusly (Excluding live albums):

Nursery Cryme
Trespass
Trick Of The Tail
Foxtrot
Selling England By The Pound
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Wind & Wuthering
And Then There Were Three
Duke

Of those 9 albums, I would rate the top 7 as truly great, the 8th as very good, and the 9th as good.

Some might not like the eighties production on these but if you can get past that(which I can since I grew up then) this is some extremely good mostly instrumental symph prog.

I think both of those are great. I bought them without having heard them when I was on a Pierre Moerlen binge. There's a third studio from a few years later and a live one as well? I haven't heard them.

That song was cool, I liked it. I do hear the similarities in sound to Duke. Also, I completely failed to realize that Alan Reed started out in Abel Ganz before joining Pallas. I've got his album Honey on the Razor's Edge, and really like his voice. I see that the 2016 remix of the first Abel Ganz record is on Bandcamp, so I may get it there. Or is the original mix the better way to go?

That's a good list, man. Happy to see Nursery Cryme in the number one spot too. I had no idea you were such a fan of the Gabriel albums! My younger brother has said before, if memory serves, that NC is probably his favorite Genesis album (and he's not a particularly big fan of them, but he likes the Gabriel era). "Harold the Barrel", "The Musical Box", and "Fountain of Salmacis" are all fantastic pieces of music. I'm also partial to "Harlequin".

Because I like their entire catalog, I'll just give my top 5 so as not to get too tiresome.

1) Selling England by the Pound
2) A Trick of the Tail / Wind & Wuthering (these are tied at 2nd place for me )
3) Abacab
4) Duke
5) Invisible Touch

SEbtP would be my desert island disc though. I can always come back to that one and get as much enjoyment out of it now as I did upon first discovering it, if not more so. And it contains my favorite song, Cinema Show.

I have terra incognita also(the third one)but not the live one(yet). I haven't listened to TI yet though.

Union is very underrated. I need to check out the live album from that tour.

I can't answer that. I didn't know it had been remixed. I have the original cassette and the 90s bootleg CD.

Is the Slow Music a DGM download? Worth getting?

Thanks! The Storm Corrosion album isn't one I listen to very often, but when I do I really enjoy it. I love Opeth, and PT/SW (though I'm cooling off on newer SW as time goes on - a different topic altogether though). I think the music is great, and very atmospheric. I just tend to forget it's on my shelf most of the time.

The Slow Music album is an actual cd, that was available only during their live shows originally. I think it was briefly available later through DGM, selling off any remaining copies. They also released 3-4 other live recordings that used to be available via download, but no physical product. I really like the album, it's a Bill Rieflin project, with the intent to improvise minimally over ambient/soundscape music. I think it's worth checking out.

I liked that one. Was good to hear Brian, Al, and Mike all together again, however briefly. I should spin that one again, along with Pet Sounds.

It's beginning to feel more like autumn here, which I'm actually kinda glad about. Although I don't look forward to the shorter daylight hours.
