Does anybody know of any 'prog ' bands without a keyboard player ? I'm talking about in the tradional sense that ticks all the right boxes i.e. epics , big sounds, complexity , virtuosity and strong melodies !

I suppose what you mean to say is that by 'prog' bands you instinctively imply 'symphonic rock' bands, but truth be said these artists were not the ones with most epics or big sounds, were mostly far less complex than more "obscure" types of progressive rock and hence also needed less virtuoso performers. But OK, one of my very fave 'symphonic' rock groups from Italy was the immensely powerful Cervello, whose sole album Melos ranks alongside Il Balletto di Bronzo's Ys as possibly the most aggressive, dark and idiosyncratic within its specific niche. It's also one of the most profoundly melancholy 'symph' albums of all time, yet never blantly pompous or kitsch at that. And Cervello indeed had a tremendously good guitarist (Corrado Rustici), a great singer and lots of mallet percussion (primarily vibraphone and glockenspiel) taking the role of the missing keys:

I'd say Rush in the 70's. Yes I know they had keyboards but they were usually in a supporting roll rather then a widdley widdley look at me play the keys as fast as I can roll. FGor complexity I'd give it up for the Hemispheres suite and La Villa Strangiato.

But, if we must... 4th Estate, several guitar based bands of that ilk...
Time. There’s a teensy bit of keyboards, but I’d still say they’re a guitar-based band. If we can include Flash (who included minimal synth/keys on their latter two albums, too), we can include these guys:

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum essentially had none, though once in a while you'd hear some understated piano, toy piano, or pump organ.

Strangely enough, no one mentioned UK yet.
If there's no ... keyboards
Is it really ... prog?
