I can only hope that together they become more than the sum of their parts. I don't find myself listening much to Steve's Love Is, Arc of Life or even Halcyon Hymns (although I didn't mind that) but I can see the potential in some kind of mix of those approaches. But maybe it'll be entirely different to those? Could I imagine Yes from a mix of Olias, Fish Out of Water, Beginnings, Ramshackled and The Story of I?

I think Halcyon Hymns is brilliant.

Indeed. Both of those were at best mediocre. Hopefully new Yes album is MUCH MUCH better than either of those two.

Right now, the new Yes album is terrific, and my odds on favorite for album of the year!

I wonder what it will be after they release it?

'Schrodinger's Yes album', it's both a masterpiece and complete crap at the same time

Now THAT's hilarious! Hope springs eternal, doesn't it?
(Wish I could get that many thumbs up on songs I've had out for years )
I totally get it though. I'm planning to like the new album if at all possible.

I listened via YouTube as H&E is the only Yes studio release I haven't bought. The lifeless, insipid production of H&E makes it difficult to make an independent assessment of the songwriting and playing but I do agree that Alan White's performance is a weak link. I would be happier if the forthcoming release had Schellen as the primary drummer with White adding a bit here and there rather than the other way around (as it appears to be). Playing by the others is fine although some of Howe's lines seem a bit pedestrian in their delivery - maybe age is catching up. The songwriting is a bit of a mixed bag but can generally be summed up as unambitious pop rock. Yes must surely realise that they won't be selling millions of albums or having top 40 singles any more so they have carte blanche to do anything they want in the studio given that their audience is limited to a core fanbase. That leads me to the unfortunate conclusion that they (collectively as songwriters) are delivering what they would want to listen to if things were the other way round and they were the potential audience. This does not bode well from my point of view as safe pop rock doesn't comprise much of my music library. Perhaps if they were to apply more Yessification to their song arrangements their output would be more to my taste.
Can we put the blame on Roy Thomas Baker? I read he was very hands off during recording.

Just listened to The Ice Bridge. My first impression is favourable - it was not what I was expecting at all. Quite a busy arrangement. Needs more listens but definitely doesn't fit the unambitious label I gave to H&E's songwriting.

Someone posted the lyrics to The Ice Bridge online. In looking at the other song titles together with album title, Iím wondering if this is a concept album of some sort.

I hit the thumbs up on every YT video so I know if I've seen it or not. And why not anyway right?

    This.

It won't trick anyone into thinking it's CTTE II or anything, but it's YESsy and hella more interesting than anything on Heaven & Earth. Production is many steps up as well, and the keys and bass feel very much like one would expect on a YES album.

Which is weird, because his style is anything but. His usual style is mile-wide production, instead of the live-band sound on H&E. Since he didn't get to mix the album, it would seem that something went really wrong.

I loved Heaven & Earth which I thought flawed, whilst being very much misunderstood (and underappreciated) re its more intentional laid back spiritual vibe.

Just listened to the new song for the first time. The only thought I've had about it on first listen is that it seems rather pomp(ous) sounding. Will try and keep open ears (and an open mind) in revisiting.

Dudes…It sounds like freaking Saga from the early 80s. No soul. No heart. Could be any number of neo-prog bands really.

Hopefully only 2 now, and I'm already exhausted.
