Thread: Is Big Big Train the Greatest Band ever ?

Is Big Big Train the Greatest Band ever ?

The answer is most probably, that it is. I've been blown away by the last four cd's. To my mind they represent the best of both Genesis and Camel. BBT, like Camel, never has a bad song. Listening to EE pt.2 last night, I was loving the strings, the horns, the vocals, the lyrics, the guitar, etc.... I just can't get enough of this band. My only question is...will they ever play live or are they a studio band ?

    Certainly not.

No. But they are very very good.

    Define "greatest"...

....if it is "most liked by you" then surely it is...

    No.

They do what they do very, very well. Pastoral, symphonic, Olde England, highly melodic, cleverly written and sumptuously arranged.

But they take no chances, never get heavy and no small-p progressive about them.

Which is fine. Like I said, they do what they do very, very well. I enjoy their music a great deal.

    But best ever? No.

Yes, in my 35+ years of listening to progressive rock, nothing is better, not.

A greatest band in the world redefines music and musical history. BBT does not.

I don't believe there can be a greatest band ever, since it is strictly subjective. But they are certainly one of my favorite bands, and create some of the best produced music around.

I suppose in some ways the answer could in fact be yes.

I just gave them a little listen...and they may be the second greatest prog band ever.

Otolithen are the best ever. At least objectively. I was blown away by them. They're the best.

Big Big Train is like a stream of bat's piss.

They shine out like a shaft of gold where all around is dark.

    In a word NO !

If Genesis had never existed we would not even be talking about BBT..................unless of course they had decided to copy someone else

Cant help thinking this thread is a bit of a wind up and I just fell for it

I'm not going to go as far as that, but I will say I'm glad I gave them a second chance with the two EE albums. I'm really impressed by them, although I think I'm a bit oversaturated with how miserable an English working man's life was.

Monty Python - Oscar Wilde sketch, I believe !

BBT are excellent and a regular choice at the moment but there can be no such thing as the greatest
band in the world, far too subjective a call.
