A team should never be played off the park on their home soil. Southgate has taken England as far as he can. His obsession with Mount is inexcusable! Time for him to go! Said earlier in the thread average player who failed at management level He's just an FA puppet!

You are insane. He's taken the team to the last semi and final. He deserves a huge amount of credit for taking the team so far.

Na, they played every game at home bar one! Terrible tactics tonight! They didnt have to play a decent team until the World Cup semi! He failed at club management and should never have got the job!
    Out of his depth!

Bringing Sancho and Rashford in the final minute proved to be a costly mistake...However, I thought the penalty shoot out was the highlight of a very dull game. England scoring after 2 mins was not the recipe for a great game as they were totally outplayed from that point on. I am very disappointed with the result, mainly for my friends and family in the UK, but sorry to say the best team won. After watching the Copa Final last night between Argentina and Brazil, this game was a poor excuse for a football match. Sorry chaps....

    Agree on all points.

Yep. Heartbreak for either team who lost a shoot out at that point. I feel terrible for Saka - not sure why he was in 5th place for the lineup...someone like Henderson with more experience makes more sense for that place imo. Anyway so proud of both teams and congrats to Italia.

Henderson has more experience missing penalties that's why he was pulled.

I believe that any professional football player, especially at this level, should be quite capable of scoring penalty shots.

Maybe Henderson is a poor example, but I just don't see the tactics of placing Rashford and Sancho who aren't warmed up in such a difficult position. And surely not a 19-year old in the 5th position. That all seemed risky to me.

The pressure is something we can never imagine AND they are Humans, not robots. Some are just better at that particular skill set. Defenders don't train as hard on shooting when they're entire purpose is to stop attackers.

I simply do not understand. I can understand that when you have a penalty specialist on the bench that you bring him on in the last minute. Why bring two young (relatively) inexperienced layers on international level on the pitch in the last minute who are NOT penalty specialists? . Rashford and Sancho barely had the chance to touch one ball in the game and then they had to go into the penalty shoutout. That is just putting an insane amount of pressure on them. Where were Sterling and Shaw?

You can surely blame the coach for this.

It was an even game. England had more drive and power, Italy had better positional game and technical skills. First half was for England, second half for Italy. Extra time could have gone either way.
In the end Italy had the better goal keeper.

Over the whole tournament Italy surely showed a bit more.

I think this is just about right.

England were superb for the first 30-40 minutes; but Italy clawed their way back into the game as the half wore on , without really creating any chances. I thought the real turning point came after the half-time break - England needed to regain some of the intiative that they had created during the opening part of the game, not let the Italian midfield settle back into thier passing game. Unfortunately, for whatever reasons, the wing backs dropped deeper & deeper, essentailly falling back into a back 5, & as a consequence, there was little or no pressure on Barella, Vaerratti & Jorginho. Then, bringing on Berardi for Immobile was a real game-changer - the Italian formation looked so much better, England were much more exposed on their flanks, & the wing backs were more or less nullified as a progressive force. The longer the game wore on, the less Kane & Sterling saw of the ball, & as a consequence, the less the Italian defence was under any sort of pressure.

Southgate got his gameplan absolutely spot-on - but the longer the gane wore on, the more the players were unable to maintain the shape that the gameplan required.

Southgate started with eight defensive players in the team. He bottled it and lost the game; not the players! Awful tactics!

    Pretty much agree with this.

Sancho & Rashford are among England's best penalty takers, 3 of 3 and 12 of 14 respectively. Sterling is 2 of 5 and Grealish missed the only one he's taken.

Hate to tell you, only Ramsey has a better major tournament record and only Capella a better overall win record. Sometimes you get beaten by a better team (just). He's ain't going anywhere.

I was proud of England and that is rare for me!

Were they played off the park by a hugely superior team? Absolutely not. Italy were barely present in the first half.

It was the usual sitting too deep in the second half that scuppered them.

Totally agree. It is very typical of English teams (national and domestic) to sit on a one-goal lead. Last night was no exception. I have been watching the national team for more than 40 years and this is by far the most exciting and adventurous one I have seen (except for the second half). Long may it continue.
