Does Mahogany Rush count?
I've got the Nightwinds CD. I've listened to it a handful of times. The singer is a little tough to get used to. He looks a lot like the Canadian magician Doug Henning! I think the drummer was a percussionist with a Canadian orchestra.
Yep. Also, it was produced by Terry Draper of Klaatu. I had the cd a long time ago but currently only have a cdr copy. I agree about the singer, who's name ironically enough is Sandy Singers, but I've gotten used to him. Also, I've always felt the bass playing was rather similar to Chris Squire's. Speaking of Doug Henning, it's also been pointed out that Neil Peart also looked a bit like Doug in the mid to late 70's.

And my question would be do tribute bands count? If so, you can't get any bigger and better than THE MUSICAL BOX from Quebec.
Everyone knows how exceptional they are, even Peter Gabriel has endorsed them for using certain copyright materials. And Steve Hackett played with them live on stage some time ago.
Sorry in advance, I know I am spoiling a bit of the fun here
Though, hopefully it will help someone to see what's out there, at least till something like 2002.

"Confusion Will Be My Epitaph"
During the heyday of so called, but not called then, prog, Rush were not a part of the conversation. In fact I don't recall any Canadian bands back then that were included. My first taste of Canadian prog was a band in Toronto called BREATHLESS[B] They played original music that was comparable to what we were listening too at the time.

Should mention a Franco-Ontario prog band. Cano. From Sudbury.
These are purportedly prog. (I'm not entertaining much hope.)
Can anyone elaborate?:
Mock Duck
David Bendeth
Spaced Out
The Code
Rouge Ciel
Five After Four
Also dates would help. (If any are non-70's, that would tell me a lot.)
CANO are more of a folk-rock band with a diverse set of influences, prog being only one of the stripes in their musical rainbow. There’s even some country in there. I have only heard the first two of their albums, but they are worth investigation to for the open-minded listener.
Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...
On the whole CANO (Cooperative Artistes du Nouvel Ontario) was more like a Conventum troupe, mixing music with theater (if memory serves well) and other multidimernsdional artistes.
Their first two are quite (and equally) good symphonic prog folk.
Their third album Eclipse (never released in CD) is more standard Canadian "prog" (like prog-related in Prog Archives) and bilingual and still quite worth a listen.
Their fourth Rendez Vous is actually really very average (the flipside is much better than the A-side) and almost sounds a bit like Bryan Adams because of Jim Valance's production. They made two further albums in the early 80's, which I've never seen in record shops
There was also another amalgam of local artiste in Hull (across Ottawa) called Connivence
00's Québécois avant-prog group with strong Klezmer/Manouche roots (three albums), in the line of Miriodor (late 80's and still existing - 11 albums - three of which are live) and Interference Sardines (00's - three albums as well)

re: Rouge Ciel. Both Rouge Ciel from 2002 and Veullier Procéder from 2005 are excellent. There was a third release which I still haven't heard.
They were perhaps not as decidedly playful as Miriodor but neither as formalist as Interférence Sardines (who were great as well), rather somewhere in the middle and arguably bent more towards "academic" modern chamber-jazz sonorities.
A fourth very good, modern avant-progressive (and not post-rock, as their tiny Wiki article claims) Canadian band are Fond of Tigers. Release the Saviours from 2007 is a gem of an album; their sound is/was huge.
"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM
Five After Four (5 After 4) released 7 albums between 1990 and 2015 (see: https://www.discogs.com/artist/4502799-5-After-4)
I only have the third one, Notorious, especially because this jazz-rock/fusion album features Scott Henderson in one track.
The Code is also a jazzrock-band, although more rockier than 5 After 4.
According to https://www.discogs.com/artist/4721848-The-Code-5 they released 3 albums between 1995 and 2009.
I have their second CD, Figli Di Baia.
Spaced Out was indeed a heavy progressive jazzrock group, formed by Antoine Fafard, who would release several solo-albums after 2011.
Between 2000 and 2008 Spaced Out released 5 studio-albums and one live-CD plus 2 DVD's, from which the first one (Live in 2000) is only interesting because of its audio; the filmed sections have little to do with the things you hear and are often repeated.
Another obscure artist just came to mind. Kurt Swinghammer. Actually a friend of mind from way back. A Niagara Falls native. I don't know all his music well but Vostok 6 should qualify as prog.
I remember CHUM fm playing Swinghammer. It's not prog.
Also Dave Howard Singers (one guy) with strange lyrics and lots of cheap modified Acetone organ with real cutting edge.
The Road Warrior - remember that one?
