That's gonna happen no matter what. I remember reading somewhere about Tommy Bolin joining Deep Purple, and there was a comment about fans who "hated Tommy just because he wasn't Ritchie Blackmore", without even giving him a chance to prove himself. There's gonna be people who are gonna say "This would have been so much better if it was Neil behind the drumkit" or whatever.
Not sure how comparisons to Peart could be avoided. Perhaps by changing musical direction sufficiently enough?
Using Portnoy would be, despite the few aspects of his playing that are obviously influenced by Peart, almost the antithesis of having Peart in the band. I don't know if this applied so much to latter day Rush albums, but the iconic Peart most of us fell in love with was characterized by, well....painstakingly crafted iconic drum parts. That is really not Portnoy's wheelhouse. These days, with occasional exceptions, Portnoy's playing is sort of a pastiche of Portnoy-isms. I'm not saying that's always a bad thing. Sometimes I like that.
I think it's conceivable that Alex Van Halen would do a fine job. If Lifeson and Lee want to write songs in the vein of latter day Rush albums....does it matter who is on drums as long as they are reasonably competent?

I dunno, all the Dream Theater stuff I heard sounded like he was trying to "out Peart" Neil, if you know what I mean. I didn't feel that was the case with Liquid Tension Experiment, where I felt lik emaybe those records were put together so quickly, he didn't have time to over think the arrangements. And like I said, the Neal Morse version of The Real Me sounded like Moon, which is definitely the total antithesis of Peart (though, oddly, appearntly, Keith was Neil's original inspiration).
But I know you mean about the painstakingly crafted drum parts. Alex said once sometimes he'd not have an idea for what he really wanted to do for a guitar solo. SO he'd throw something down on the tape during the demo or basic track sessions, thinking he'd come up with something better later. But by the time it came to doing the proper guitar overdubs, Neil would have written a drum part, adjusted his fills, etc, to fit that guitar solo, so Alex would be stuck with a solo he didn't particularly like. And it was something where, if he had changed the solo, Neil would have to change his drum part. I guess his point was, he learned at some point that he had to come up with something RIGHT NOW, so that it'd be happy with whatever was gonna be in the final cut, as it were.
How about Terry Bozzio on drums?
IF they reunite and it's a damn big IF, it will likely be with a mutual friend and certainly a Canuck. I suspect what we'll get is a Geddy solo album with a possible guest appearance by Alex.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
I definitely noticed things that were stolen from Neil. I haven't listened to much Dream Theater in a long time now, but I do recall having similar thoughts about him trying to outdo Peart, but I think that would be selling Portnoy a bit short. I don't find their styles all that similar when looking at them from 100 miles up.
Another thought about painstakingly-crafted parts -- I was just thinking about this the other day. There are several instances of Peart (and Geddy) coming up with stuff that progressed with each verse or chorus. Like they would get busier as the song progressed. I can't think of many other bands that do that in quite the same way.

Maybe they could use a different drummer for each tune, that would be interesting. Maybe other guests too, not just the 3 piece sounds. Who knows what they'll do.
Geddy & Alex don't need a famous drummer for their project.... they need a drummer.
I am sure they, like other bands missing members *coughyescough*, will make the hire based upon edited YT videos. Seems like the best way to go really.

I will ask the guy I first heard it from for more details. He mentioned there was some pretty significant evidence for the rumor. I Imagine that Geddy and Alex would probably be playing with a few people. Its certainly their privilege , regardless if they were just fooling around, or actually trying someone out. I just dont see these guys not wanting to do what they have done for the past 40 years. Of course, It may just be like wearing stretchy pants in your room... ee's just for fun...

Coney Hatch frontman Andy Curran:
"... I'm also excited about a new studio project that features Maiah Wynne, a young vocalist from Portland, Oregon. I played some of the songs Maiah and I wrote together for Alex Lifeson, and he asked if he could be involved. I had to pinch myself during that call! We have seven songs completed and Alex played on pretty much every one. One song was already featured in the Netflix series Tiny Pretty Things, and we're planning a release-maybe a cool NFT bundle. The band is called Envy of None and it has a trippy, moody, ambient, sometimes evil, pop vibe. ..."

Have you never heard sometimes evil pop?
I once saw Van Halen not long after i saw Rush (maybe around the time of Clockwork Angels). Of course there was a section set aside for Alex to do an epic drum solo, complete with triggered salsa instrumental tracks for Alex to jam along with.
Although it was fun keeping with the party atmosphere of a VH show but hugely pale compared to the Professor.
The idea that Ged and Alex could jam with Alex VH could be kind of fun in a slam bang, big rock beat sort of way, i'd be receptive anyway.
Mike Portnoy - Oh Hell No!
"Fun" is the operative term here. Having fun doing the thing that you've already been doing for a living for more than half of your life is a blessing that any of us would be lucky to have bestowed upon us. Whether or not the rumor of working with Alex Van Halen is true, more power to them, I say!
I think this is key - I mentioned it before - IF they are back to making music they will get a low-key drummer... maybe a recommend by Nick Raskulinecz... It does feel like they would stay away from a superstar drummer... it is interesting to me how the artists tend to be in a very different frequency from the fans -
We all wish for a new supergroup, with a superstar drummer; even as I say they won't probably do it like that, I am wishing for Gavin Harrison or Marco Minnemann.
My heart wants it but my brain tells me that the guys will probably operate on a plane that values things that are important to them.. no to me!
All, IMHO, of course...

I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.
I personally would like to see Ged put the My Favorite Headache band together for a tour. Those songs are good and have never had a live performance opportunity. This would also give Ged a chance to break out all those basses he featured in his book.
I’d like to see Alex come out for the second set, play the one or two good songs from his own solo album Victor with Ged’s band, maybe an acoustic piece or two as well, then finish the show with a selection of reinterpreted Rush classics that rock.
My two cents. I want nothing to do with a new style Rush that just finds a big name drummer.
No Neil, No Rush for me.
