A pioneering jazz drummer. Completely groundbreaking playing. Very sad day today.

Saw him in Guelph several years back; a great trio with Kidd Jordan and D.D. Jackson. Graves perhaps had the second largest drum kit I ever saw (after Neil Peart), but certainly the largest I was ever to see up close from the third row.

RIP, I know the name but I don't think I have any of his music. Maybe a few sideman things?

Ingot to see him do a solo gig at a improvised music festival a few years ago. Interesting dude.

    RIP

One of the more interesting characters from around that time and one whose drumming is always a tour de force.

As a drummer (and a lover of drum music) I always like this quote:

"I couldn't understand how a guy would sit and play a basic beat all the time. In African drumming, the drum is in the forefront. Timekeeping for the drummer? I said no way. You just can’t stay in the background; that’s not the nature of the instrument. Most drummers are so reduced." He certainly played that way.

Never saw him and greatly regret that.

Apparently he had this exhibition at the Institute Of Contemporary Art In Philadelphia. Sadly I only found out about it after his death. I'm glad he got to complete it though. It sounds like it would have been something to experience.
