Interesting to see how far the All-Star game has fallen through the years.

^^ I still remember one game ending in a tie after the 9th inning. None of the managers involved wanted to risk injuring their players by playing extra innings.

That was Bud Selig's stroke of genius, wasn't it?

Right now, I'm watching ESPN's split-screen silliness while streaming WFAN out of New York.

I never understood the issue with a tie in an exhibition game

The game is for the fans. Every fan who is watching wants their league to win.

Granted, in this case, they simply ran out of pitchers.

I guess it's better than starting each inning with a ghost runner.

Ties are evil. A sporting event should have a clear winner and loser, IMO.

Cruz to Tampa. Good move for the Rays. I imagine the Twins will unload a few more players in the next week.

The Cleveland Indians will be changing their name to the Cleveland Guardians.

All of the time they took, and that's the best they could come up with?

If that't the case, they should name themselves the Cleveland Sieves.

I can't believe they came up with Guardians, especially since they have the longest World Championship drought of any team. There's nothing to guard.

Lovely, huh? When two of your best relievers are on COVID quarantine and your GM and manager are dumbasses.

They wanted a name that specifically related to Cleveland. The Guardians are the Art-Deco statues on the Hope Memorial Bridge near downtown.

Of all the names that were floated, Guardians was the one I would have chosen. Not that I care all that much, it's Baseball, so... I was afraid they were going to go retro and name them the Spiders, as some fans wanted.

After reading more about the context, it's actually pretty cool, and has grown on me.

Was discussing this with some guys at work, and we were talking about how more teams should somehow reflect their town's history or culture.

So do the Cowboys have to change their name.

No. But the Blackhawks should and so should the Braves. As much as the Braves claim to do outreach in the Native American community (and they do and have had N.A. leaders in to discuss the name), it simply isn’t a good look.
My rule on this? Don’t be a dick. If something make someone uncomfortable, then don’t do it. Names like the Celtics or Fighting Irish or Cowboys or Mariners (etc) don’t make those groups feel uncomfortable. Native American names do. This, don’t be a dick and change the names.

I’ll happily root for the Atlanta Brave or Atlanta Hammers or whatever. It’s just a goddamn logo for a sports team.

Sheezuz, the Marlins are a disgrace. What and embarrassment. I guess I have the San Francisco Giants to root for, the team I grew up with. Went to a lot of games at Candlestick Park in the 60s and 70s.

As a spelling pedant, I'm uncomfortable with the name of my home baseball team, and I demand that they change it to Red Socks.

A good gag, and certainly something called for in light of my undoubted overreaction. For that, I certainly don’t mind apologizing and pulling back.

So I’ll amend: any legitimate uncomfortableness merits attention.

For all poor spellers (and I’ll admit that I am not the best), your plights are real; however, you have not been subjugated, relinquished and subjugated as have the native peoples of this continent.

These teams weren’t named to honor these peoples; they were named in an obvious appropriation of a perceived aspect of them.
