Though I'm skeptical about the "up-mix", I have to say I was pleased with what they did for the surround version of Anthony Phillips' Field Day, which is only solo instruments so there's nothing to place in different areas of the room, but they used some kind of magic that gives it a definite in-the-room feeling.

Agreed, but that probably would not fly with something as densely packed as Olias of Sunhillow.

Udester - Are there programs that allow you to isolate each instrument/voice/sound from a two-channel stereo mix and then essentially do whatever you want with those (like then essentially having a 24-track or whatever master for example)? Is this close to how the surround Gong You was done?

I remember a interview with Giles Martine years ago about how he de mixed or extracted elements recorded on the same tracks for The Beatles rock band game
No idea how they do this these says

But the way Simon Heyworth was able to separate does guitars and spin them around was mighty impressive

Since the 5.1 certainly won't be a discrete mix made from the multi-tracks I think I will stick with Audio Fidelitey Stereo SACD which sound really good:

I always assumed they had master tapes in order to isolate those instruments for the Rockband game, but maybe they also use some mysterious DAW editing sound extraction program? Ill try to Google it...

Olias Of Sunhillow is one of my favorite LP's ever. It is perfect and needs no further alteration of any kind.

I think they used Retouch by Cedar using demix technology – the ability to remove and separate sounds from a single track.

I was not overly impressed with Audio Fidelity's SACD of Olias - sounded about the same as my Japanese CD pressing from many ages ago. I intend to pick up the Esoteric release. --Peter

I got mine from Cherry Red a few days ago. Very nice package although the story is mostly too small to read. The cd sounds better than my old Japanese import but not hugely so, the dvd in stereo played thru my blu Ray player sounds good too, nice images of the artwork on screen. I don't have surround sound so can't comment.

Olias is very cheap and easy to find on vinyl. Can't beat the great cover art. I have the WB CD with a ridiculous cover reproduction.

I am not too bummed out regarding tge artwork being g CD size, as I managed to find myself a copy of the vinyl album dirt cheap. It has a very small tear on the back cover. I don't even have a deck to play it on, I just wanted the cover.

There are two booklets in the package, one for the lyrics and one for a write up with pics and memorabilia, a pity they didn't include a plain text version of the story too but still have my treasured vinyl too so thats ok.

Its good the vinyl is easy to come by second hand but kind of sad too..

(As an aside I was just scanning a bunch of unwanted cd's into Music Magpie, the prices they are offering are pathetic.)
