Thread: Artists, self-promote your best songs here!

Artists, self-promote your best songs here!

Happy New Year everyone. I've been trying to think of ways for independent artists to get the word out about their music, and maybe this is too simple to work, but I figured why not give it a try. So the idea is this: Just post a link here to one of your favorite songs that you've released, and give a short description of why it's special to you. I think this would be a good way for us as artists to get some lesser-heard music out there, and as listeners to sample the best of what the artists have to offer. So go for it. I know I'm interested in hearing your songs and your stories. Maybe if the thread takes off I'll share a bit of my own music, but I'd like to hear from you first.

I'm going to cheat and do two, one Proggy and one more straight-ahead rock.

For the Proggy one, this is Forbidden Planet from Eccentric Orbit's 2004 album Attack of the Martians. This was the last song I composed for the album, and was my first venture into truly large-scale musical storytelling (the title tracks is also 10+ minutes, but is really divided into three distinct sections, whereas this track is far more integrated). The piece is built on recurrent themes, and essentially tells the story of the movie musically. The movie is, in some sense, a retelling of Shakespeare's The Tempest, but it also incorporates Freudian psychology, the "monsters from the id" essentially being repressed sexual urges. Fertile ground for a musical journey. For long-scale composition, I think this is the best work I've ever done.

    https://eccentricorbit.bandcamp.com/...rbidden-planet

The other track is the title track from my classic rock band Brave Pursuit's debut CD. I wrote all of this song including the lyrics, and play bass, acoustic guitar, and sing lead vocals. It's about growing older but trying to hang onto some of that youthful fire. See if you can catch the Kerouac reference in the lyrics. A friend of mine did this cool video for the song that has all the lyrics! If I had to pick one single composition that I'm most proud of, it would probably be this one, both musically and lyrically.

Great idea Kevin! Can't wait to hear what others post!

Great idea for a thread! Thanks for starting it!

We released a new album in November, and honestly, it's really hard to pick just one to highlight as being my favorite. But that being said, I really love the fourth track, "Stars Apart". I think it might be the most fun, creative, and collaborative one. Lyrically, it's a sci-fi breakup story about a relationship that collapses so catastrophically, the girl decides to join a deep space mission, leaving the guy on Earth to deal with the emotional fallout and reflect on what he did wrong with no real hope of redemption. Musically, it's total 90's pop rock (Collective Soul and Oasis were my big inspirations)...but with a really adventurous middle section that has some elements lifted from Porcupine Tree, Steely Dan, and more and features a really killer Moog solo from our keyboardist Dylan.

Check it out on Spotify at: https://open.spotify.com/track/2lj0s7Ak1YmEnJJWEj1zTa

Like I said, it's really hard to pick a favorite, though, so I definitely recommend giving the whole record a listen! I think you'll enjoy it.

You can stream and/or buy it (including pre-ordering a limited edition red vinyl copy!) at the links in my signature.

I already posted this but I still like it from one of my 4 extended releases in 2020.
I decided in 2020 that as long my music made me feel ok then it was pretty well job done. I may have to play to help pay the bills again but that will be 2022 for me if plans go ahead to move back to Canary Islands.

    Hmmmmm.....
Best? I dunno, but my favorite from my CD is probably the title track:

    Cool, hope you enjoy!

Listening to Stars Apart now. Must say, that is a very compelling concept on which the song is based. I like the musical interlude beginning ~4:30, and the Moog solo is awesome! Definitely fits the track! Nice work!

This is the proggiest thing from my current album--most of what follows this is more abstract/avant/ambient...

And this is probably the prettiest tune I've written.

I'll post a link to a song off my 2020 release. The album is a recap of 2020, in all its desperation and insanity. It is a mix of styles from classical to electronica, from rock to prog to ambient. But here's one song that might best be called Progressive. it's called November - The Political Circus.

If you like that you can hear the rest of the album here:

    https://bobmcneice.bandcamp.com/

and several other songs on my Soundcloud page here:

I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoyed writing, playing and releasing them.

An old one, not my own composition, but something I did for my dad, who didn't like harpsichord, so I did an arrangement of Italian Concerto by Bach with synthesizers.

I feel this is my finest so far. Alistair Gordon on vocals (Tony Banks' "Bankstatement") and Neil Taylor on guitar (Tears For Fears, Chris DeBurgh).

    Sounds excellent!

one of our most ambitious Advent tunes

    Greetings Kevin (and all),

Thanks for starting this thread. It's really hard to choose what may be best, but I'd say one of our signature Advent tracks is:

    https://advent-prog.bandcamp.com/track/ramblin-sailor

A few reasons for this particular choice:

    1. It is among our most ambitious works, being an 18-minute epic with 164 time-signature changes.
    2. This was definitely the most challenging tune we've played on stage.
    3. Our good friend, Shunji Saegusa (of KENSO), played bass on the track.
    4. Today happens to be the album's 15th birthday.

    I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks a lot and best wishes,

    Alan

    Hello Kevin,

Brilliant idea! Thanks for thinking of doing this here. Here is a link on YouTube for our epic prog piece (The Eternal Spring) from our last release, Myriad - Specter, Fate & Fable, circa 2012:

Not my best, but my first short composition, written when I was at school, during the Dutch class. So just writing notes on paper, without having an instrument at hand.

A cool thread indeed, thanks Kevin! Here's one I've done several years ago with a couple friends, one is from India who played tabla.

I loved what he and the guitar player came up with, so I hope you enjoy this!

I will put this here to help promote this thread. Less so to promote this new thing. Rather it's a little thank you to the PE crowd. A new stealth release EP only available on Soundcloud right now.

This is all new music which will appear at some point later in the year on an album, we hope. For now, here is a nice chunk of abstract avant rock music to add some musical spice to your day.

All the best to everybody here. Thanks for starting this thread. Some really great things here
And the code is a play, a play is a song, a song is a film, a film is a dance...

For me it would have to be my 51 minute epic “Track Of Days”. It was difficult to write but I think all the ideas introduced compliment each other. It was also my first attempt recording at 24/96. I hope you listen all the way through.

Time for some new music! My next release (tentatively called 'Seven' ) should be released before end of year. Here's a piece from it - called "Troubling Times". Lots going on here, typical for a Dean Watson tune ... I hope you like it!

Awesome as always Dean. I'll be on the lookout.

I made a simple piano piece one night a few weeks ago when I couldn't sleep. It's trending pretty high on Bandlab so I suppose people are liking it.

Wow! An awful lot of great stuff in here! Thanks to everyone for posting, and please continue to do so. I haven't caught up on all of it, but I'm trying.

I guess it's been long enough now that I can share one of mine. I thought about starting with a Farpoint song, since I've released the most stuff with that band, but I think I'll change directions here and share another one. Some of you may or may not know that a few years back I started a project with some musical friends including Steve Katsikas from Little Atlas, Brian Coralian from IZZ, Dennis Mullin from Iluvatar, and Wade Summerlin from Cobweb Strange. The group is called Greyfeather and we released our debut album in 2017. There are a few songs on that album I'm really proud of, but I think my favorite has to be this one. I'd love to hear any thoughts or feedback from anyone so inclined:

After giving this a listen, I can understand how it's one of your favorites Kevin.
The bass line along with a very Native American rhythm really opens the song nicely, and the Native American vibe continues throughout.
Ya'll did great on this one, and I'm also a big fan of Illuvatar and of Dennis' guitar playing as well.
Thanks for sharing, good to see you back.
Hope you've been surviving this pandemic stuff ok.
