Of course Miriodor albums have a stupendously high standard.

Ouch... You just reminded me of a recent review I saw there for Kenso's first album, saying that it was their only album with any memorable songs on it and that the rest of their records were all "run-of-the-mill Japanese jazz funk."

    Talk about clueless...

You know, even though I've listened to and have owned some Avant Prog over the years, it hasn't always been a good fit more me. When I went to Downtown Music Gallery, I'd think to myself as I fingered through the racks, "Where's the damn PROG?" However, over the last several months, Avant Prog has clicked for me, and most of the time now some version of it is my music of choice. So give me a pat on the back!

I used to imagine Ian (Carrs) sitting on his balcony drinking a couple of fine beers and listening to a STACK of Avant Prog CDs and wondering "How can he DO that?" but now, I totally get it! In the past I've bought some things, somehow knowing that I wasn't going to be that into it at the time, but in the future I'd thank myself. Like the Art Zoyd box, for example. And I was right. It's partly due to Covid-19; I've spent so much time in the backyard, listening to music on my Bluetooth headphones, especially when it was warmer, but even still a lot now. Hanging out with my blind cat, to whom I like to give some outdoor time every day. He loves it! And I think the political insanity has been conducive to it, too. So anyway, consider me in on this binge!

I just finished listening to Underground Railroad - "The Origin of Consciousness" for the first time, and I've had it for 16 years! I guess that's not "the hard stuff," but it counts, right? It's a damned good album, IMO. Not sure where I'll go next - I guess I'll look and see what you guys have been listening to...

IMHO, there's not a grain of mediocrity in anything they ever committed. They are perhaps the single most amazingly consistent progressive band I ever heard, considering the longevity of their "production line". You can lose yourself in any one of their releases simply for the sheer amount of stunning ideas and instrumental achievements. An album like Jongleries Elastiques alone contains more blunt creativity than the entire discography of many other artists that I'm still fond of.

    Bewildering!

Absolutely true, apart from it being an ipod.

I have lately been too stressed out to really listen to avant-prog so my drug of choice have been ECM jazz. Now I am back and dipping my toes little bit to the pool again. Now listening Henry Cow : 40th Anniversary Box Vol.1 : Beginnings . This represents Henry Cow as their closest to Canterbury. Especially songs "Rapt in a Blanket" ja "Came to See You" are really Caravan-esque with dash of Soft Machine. Charming stuff even if miles apart from the best Cow-music.

    Today I listened to:

    Univers Zero - Implosion (2004)

This is one I hadn't shown love to at all, so it was nice to hear. Very good! I like the way the album is structured: There's a minute or so of sort of electro-acoustic ambiance with rumbling thunder and such before all the other tracks, which range from 3-10 minutes long. Nothing else jumped out at me exactly, so I might throw it on again after Rock Bottom finishes.

    Today's main avant-prog listen:

    Mats/Morgan - 35th Anniversary Collection

^ Discogs actually designates it as 'Easy listening'. https://www.discogs.com/Vladimir-Cos...elease/8202335

Who'd have thought? I mean, there's already a "meta-connection" to EL-music with obvious avant-gardists like Hector Zazou, Pascal Comelade, Jean-Claude Vannier or even some of Lars Hollmer's stuff, but I guess the caption never really struck me.

Maybe that would sound like Patrick Moraz doing some avant progressive

  17. #67
^ Moraz' two albums with Bruford aren't exactly that, but Music for Piano & Drums especially turns in some great ideas and performance. Just think what he'd might have done if he'd stayed on for longer with Yes and somehow managed to influence their artistic decisions even further than those evident on Relayer.

The Bernholc Patchwork Orchestra 3 thing rather reminds me of a more typically (weirdo/cerebral) French take on some of the concepts later elaborated by Hermann Szobel on his sole release, albeit less immediately "impressive" and virtuoso.

    NP: 5uu's - Regarding Purgatories

5uu's, man... Now that's a band right there. I actually have Hunger's Teeth and Crisis in Clay, both of which I like -- in spite of being so different from what I "usually" listen to. It's incredible and fascinating music.

Yes - Cutler - great stuff. Got it for a fiver from ReR some years back. Been a while but I remember some samples, turntables, musique concrete, etc...I should dust it off.
