See, I hear Shirley and I think of the late Shirley Hemphill of the late 70's "What's Happening" fame.

I should think that in a music group you would at least think of Shirley Bassey, Shirley Scott, or Shirley Manson.

I can only think of "Poor Shirley" one of the deep cuts on the Christopher Cross debut LP.

More relevant to this thread I've really warmed to "That That Is" over the years. Initially I was just bemused and bewildered by that track but eventually the Yesness of it all kicked in and won me over. Mind Drive too for that matter.

If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.

These interviews are so great, I could've listened to you all talk about Yes for another few hours. Henry is a legend!

The Yes Union Deluxe Box set thread was "locked" after you uploaded the last post, do you know why?

Enjoyed this episode Sean. Thanks for continuing the history of Yes conversation.

This is true. I don't really exist: I am but a legend.

It was locked because it was a redundant thread; there was already a "Union 30" or the like so Cozy merged the two threads.
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

Here's Part 3 (Solo Albums and Offshoot Bands) for any of you that missed it or have yet to check it out.

We did an hour talking about the live albums as well, which I will share later this week. It will be Part 4 and the final in this Yes series. Seemed like a good one to do as a stand alone, since these are so long anyway. In a good way, but still....

I've really enjoyed chatting with Ameryic and Henry and we have plans to do as similar one (or maybe two?) on King Crimson before long. I want to do one about Canterbury bands as well, though that could wind up being several segments. Maybe we can find a few key players from that scene to guest as well. That would be a nice bonus. Stay tuned.

Right, peaking in the 30s, 40s and absolutely plummeting between the 50s and 60s, which would explain why someone like me, born in the 70s, considers it old fashioned, because it is. I understand Jon's next song about junkies is going to revolve around a lady named Agnes and her friend Violet.

LOL I get it. Yeah. Would we like that tune better if he just sang about a grounded purple wolfhound? And maybe yelled Cha Cha Cha Cha Cha.

    I probably would.

There are other parts of that tune that were quite good. They deserved better lyrical company.

I've always really like That, That Is, personally. I just chuckle a bit at Jon using 'Shirley' as a contemporary name. Pointing that out here among the cold, dry fact-checking and chart-making was a mistake not dissimilar to ones I've made here in the past, but that's just foolish ol' me.

It's not a deal breaker for me. It was back in the 90s but I relisted about ten years ago and found a lot to like anyway.

Actually, I find this line far worse/cheesy than mentioning Shirley- "She took it out on God and laid her soul to hell and let the baby die..."

That "They never give you a reason, they never give you a reason" section is really nice though, musically and the lyrics are vague enough to not spoil it.

I don't even find it bad or cheesy, just amusing. Lyrics are never a deal breaker for me. When they are really well crafted or thought provoking, great, but otherwise they are of little importance IMO.

If that is cheesy I just don't understand how you people tolerate 90% of rock lyrics.

Exactly. That is the reason I love Italian vocals with Italian progressive rock bands. I have no idea what they're saying but the words blend perfectly with the instruments.
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)

Why are we talking about Italian lyrics and not mine and Aymeric's #hottakes? We must've said something controversial. ;-)

    Hey men,
I just finished part 1 and enjoyed it enormously. The three of you had a real breadth of knowledge. Fascinating stuff. Really looking forward to the next part.

When you expect your less than flattering opinions on Wakeman's solo output would generate some dissent but the problem is that everyone secretly knows it's true...

Here's the last installment of the series. This one looks at the live albums over the years and also, the remixes Steven Wilson did and their bonus tracks.

I really enjoyed chatting with Henry and Aymeric and we plan to do another series like this before too long. We are eyeing King Crimson for the next catalog to dissect.
