I don't know how much of the material that made it on to that latter album was finished at the time - but the leap from ELP to Trilogy is huge, & to make it in such a short period of time is breathtaking.
    I never really thought about it like that. Trilogy is a much more sophisticated record (and one they found hard to do justice to live), so to do that in such a short space of time is quite something.

    That footage of them in Brussels is worth seeking out for fans of the first album. It came out as Masters From The Vaults. They and the crowd are having a lot of fun- the opposite of the rather austere reputation they picked up.

    To me the early ELP were equal parts a loose jam band, but also a take-no-prisoners punk outfit. By '74 they'd pretty much lost both these qualities.
    I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.
