Pre-order up for an archival release from a rarely documented lineup of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers featuring:
    Freddie Hubbard (Trumpet)
    Nathan Davis (Tenor saxophone)
    Jacki Byard (Piano)
    Reggie Workman (Bass)
    Art Blakey (Drums)
    http://www.samrecords.fr/shop/art-bl...-records-1965/
Sam Records do excellent work. The live Nathan Davis recording they issued from a couple of years back is stellar.

Listening to Wishbone Ash album Pilgrimage. Honestly didn't know Vas dis was a cover version. Never heard of Jack McDuff. Just played a live version of McDuff playing Vas dis. Great tune. Much better than WA, but gotta give them (Wishbone Ash) props anyway.

I've been enjoying these conversations at the NYU Jazz dept. Mainieri is 80 years old in this 2019 interview and he looks and sounds so youthful. He's had a very long and diverse career going back to the late 50s.

Great camera shots here so you can see Monk's hands at work.

I second that. Dunno how I missed this doc. Saw Potter and the Underground years back in SF--with a bassist, no less. Great show. Potter is a guiding light, and an endless well of ideas, expressed at light speed. He's incredible.

Any recommendations on which Potter albums to seek out? Bonus points for Taborn sitting in.

Two outstanding 60's sessions by alto saxophonist Marion Brown are compiled on one disc."Why Not and Porto Novo Revisited" on the ezz-thetics label (an offshoot of HatHut). Each record has been available on their own over the years but if you've never owned 'em this is a no-brainer.

Thanks, Walt! I was looking for a copy of Porto Novo a few years ago but I didn't find anything affordable.

Two enthusiastic thumbs up for Kurt Rosenwinkel’s latest ‘Angels Around’. Rosenwinkel is a guitarist who has released about 10 records since the mid 90s. This one is a trio date which will appeal to anyone who likes the idea of a blend of 16 Men of Tain-era Holdsworth, Pat Metheny’s trio work and a healthy dose of Bill Frissell. Really good stuff. Couple of originals and several lesser-known standards. Here’s their take on Monk’s “Ugly Beauty”:
