I realize I'm a little late to the table, but I just discovered this 11-year old (at the time) Indonesian pianist. He's phenomenal.

I liked what I heard, perhaps not immediately for the new record, but enough to search a bit further backwards... And I've picked up both Venezuelan Suite & Latin American Songbook - both of which I have been hugely impressed by. I think that this will be music that will really reward repeated listenings - complex arrangements, subtle exchanges between the jazz canon & those of various Latin American musical styles, especially Venezuelan music which is also relatively new to me, & I'm guessing rarely, if ever, a direct influence in jazz.
    Pura Vida!.
    My pleasure!.
I was looking to hear his Afinidad quartet together with the Imani Winds; I was surprised by the final result: "Sorrows & Triumphs" is a special, finest and interesting record IMO !.
And as you did, I will go for those albums and keep exploring his music/work.

    Finally,
    Found this excellent video:

Two recent releases from trumpet-bass-drums groups are getting spins here at Casa de Walt.

Threefold, with Ramon Lopez-drums,Percy Pursglove-trumpet, and Rafal Mazur on acoustic bass guitar. On Not Two records.

Musaeum Clausum-s/t,with Louis Laurain-cornet,Hannes Lingens-drums and Sebastien Beliah-bass.On Umlaut Records.

Unfortunately there are no clips,YT or otherwise for these bands.Only short samples on the Squidco site, where i bought them both.

    Both are keepers.Recommended.

Yeah, a lucky find. Try the set Abercrombie, Bruninghaus, and Gurtu. It's audio only but some great music.

Wow - just a reminder of what a huge loss the music suffered with John's passing. That was simply brilliant.

With today the anniversary of John's passing, I'm thinking about and listening a lot to his music. I've been enjoying some nice conversations with his widow, Lisa, on Facebook also.

In memory of John Abercrombie, without a doubt one of my absolute favourite guitarists of the past 50 years, a bunch of links that some folks might enjoy reading:

    1. A 2004 interview: John Abercrombie: Extending the Tradition

    2. Some CD Reviews here and https://www.allaboutjazz.com/class-t...ohn-kelman.phphere.

    3. A couple of Extended Analyses

    4. Two Rediscovery column pieces.

    5. Some live reviews here, here, and here.

    6. A review of the recently released film, Open Land: Meeting John Abercrombie (flawed, to be sure, but still absolutely worth the watch!).

RIP, John. We loved ya and we miss ya.
