There are several volumes of those Virtuoso CDs. Which are good. The first album I bought by him was Intercontinental, which is good too.
Yeah Intercontinental was one of the first ones I heard - his sound is glorious on that one - and I think Eberhard Weber is the bassist? His best playing in my opinion is in his solo or duet performances - with Zoot Sims, Ella Fitzgerald and Herb Ellis all come to mind as great pairings. When all is said and done I think he is simply the best guitarist who ever lived - can open, worms everywhere.

I do too, but it's their weakest so far, IMHO.

I've only listened a couple of times, so this is a sort of provisional judgement - but it feels to me that their trajectory parallels that of Neil Cowley's Trio.
After initial stomping releases, their records have got progressively (as it were!) more moody/introspective/self-conscious/"atmospheric". I think that this may be partly because neither Cowley himself nor Chris Illingworth are strictly jazzers - & so don't have a natural musical idiom within which to work or against which to play off; & instead, they're in a place where they're falling back on creating something more like musical soundscapes. It's almost as if they're getting close to exhausting their compositional vocabularies.
I like the new album well enough, but I do feel that, like Cowley, there have been diminishing returns over the last couple of releases.
For the jazz freaks in and around the Netherlands; This quite a cool lineup for a 1 day Jazz festival.

Been listening to some 70s Jack DeJohnette albums. Untitled from 1976 is the one that really grabbed my ear. Of course it's never been issued on CD. This sounds like Nguyen Le years before he made a record.
Hell yes he is! He, and his band, know how to throw a party. I've seen him twice......hopefully will see him again. I'm loving Humdrum Star just as much as the others. They're all similar yet different, so no need to compare.
That's rather the point. Jazz is one ingredient among many. It's about playing with idioms rather than playing within them.
