My pleasure. I'd seen a late incarnation of Alas play a bunch of their repertoire live in 2007, but I don't think I'd seen his quintet or septet cover this one live (in person)--although both of these post-Alas performances were also great.

Sadness.Just read that Arthur Blythe died after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 76.I saw Blythe a few times back in the late 70's/early 80's.Always a distinctive voice on alto.

R.I.P. and thanks for the music,Arthur Blythe.

That is very sad - he had a really great tone on the alto.

my top English jazz album (though it's more JR/F, really)

This was reissued on Vocalion back then... is this again on that label?

Another beauty (with the same three)

As a Nucleus fan who's gotten pretty much everything that's in print or has been recently in print except for some vinyl-only live titles, it sounds like it might be worth my while to seek out Carr's earlier work.

http://www.londonjazznews.com/2013/0...ck-sextet.html Apparently it's a new album taken from BBC archives, not a reissue?

It seems to be available in CD, vinyl and download forms.

    Exactly Dave!.

    From Gearbox Records:
    https://gearboxrecords.wazala.com/pr...arrick-sextet/

Prelude To Heart Is A Lotus
12" 180gram 33rpm LP includes free download code sticker
    GB1517
Curated, analogue mastered and cut at Gearbox Studio

"Prelude to Heart is a Lotus is a 1968 BBC Jazz in Britain recording now released for the first time. Pianist and composer Michael Garrick was 35 years old and together with close associates - saxophonist Don Rendell and trumpeter Ian Carr - was defining innovative new directions in British jazz. Prelude to Heart is a Lotus is the precursor to the Argo Records Heart is a Lotus studio album which was released two years later, and this remarkable music shines a new light on an extraordinary period of creativity in Garrick’s long career."

Friends, I´m having a great time exploring some of the "gems" that Gearbox Records has edited!

yeah, it did drive me into error, but since I've discovered something just as good, it's more than forgiven

Thing is that the second album of the MGS is not that good
Home Stretch Blues has got some odd things on it
but the third one Troppo is almost as good as the Lotus album

And from those same years, the MG Fairground's Mr Smith's Apocalypse is simply something impermeable for me.
