    Modal jazz = Trane IMHO

this is the second rec for him in two or three weeks (was the first one not already on one of his PA jazz/fusion threads?), and indeed I think it's outstanding.
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

We had a good time at the Dhafer Youssef, the core of the band was pretty straight jazz then with the twist of the Oud and Dhafer's vocals. Enjoyed it. He played one anti Trump sing a long song which didn't fit with the rest of the set.

I like the Bushmans Revenge, good not great for me.

Somehow forgotten Coltrane. I've got My Favorite Things, Ballads, and some other things, but nothing that's quite modal by him. I'll have to look into it. Thanks.

MMMhhh!!!... Though Olé was modal jazz enough, I'm thinking of Africa Brass, Meditations, Impressions, Crescent... Rather than MFT or Giant Steps, reaélly

Listened to it again yesterday, haven't changed my opinion much, its a good album that will probably get plenty of spins but I don't get the level of adoration I'm seeing by some on here & PA.

    Ian, Friends,
For my ears and beyond if the album is good or bad, the music really works for me plus it is a "back to their roots" which I celebrate BTW.
    That`s my case.

Oh I can certainly hear why it works for others, its got a thing going. People's whose tastes I respected have been loving on it so I'm certainly not dissing it.

Mary Halvorson Octet - Away with You.

    Bandcamp: https://maryhalvorson.bandcamp.com/album/away-with-you

    Live from Y.T.:

Of the records I've got lately, I got this one from Mary Halvorson ... the first one I own: "never is too late" for a great discovery I think and IMO; before, I have been recommended enough and even I have heard several of her songs here and there but it is not until now that I`m beginning to explore her music which I like so far.

    Thoughts about her music/etc..!?!.
    Thanks in advance!.

I'm less impressed with her playing than with her writing and the players she chooses. I have her other octet LP Illusionary Sea, which is hip.

RIP Barbara Carroll. She was 92. I just heard an old interview with her. I actually never heard of her before but then again I'm only a moderate jazz fan.

Not sure if she is well known enough around here to have her own RIP thread though.
