I listened to these albums for the first time yesterday. I was really knocked out by Free Form, and Abstract which are neither, despite the titles.

Never heard them either... Is this a Vocalion label release??

Who's playing on those albums... Is it Swinging London Jazz Scene musicians (Harriott was a fixture there in the 60's)??

Let's be careful of those pigeonholes... Ornette Coleman's early "free jazz" albums can sound very common and not avant-garde to our ears today, because the scene and the style has grown out of proportion afterwards... Back in the 1959 days, Ornette's Shape of Jazz To Come was revolutionary, but nowadays, if not aware of its historical conrtext, it's just another jazz album, not particularly "free jazz"

if I go by your opinion, I'm kind of not surprised that Free Form and Abstract are not what they seem, because from what I know of him (his Indo-jazz days), Harriott was not really an avant-garde jazz dude.

Actually, Joe Harriott & Tubby Hayes can be seen as the first-wave of late 50's UK jazzers, ones that helped the futire young guard (Garrick, Collier, Westbrook, Gibbs, Rendell, Ardley, Carr, Taylor, McL etc...) to rise and start their career

I'm not familiar with any of the musicians, but the playing is great! If you click on this Wiki link, there are links for all three albums in the discography section. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Harriott

I'd call the music hard bop, and the playing sounds very inspired. I don't know what companies actually own the rights to the recordings? There are several public domain label re-issues. Real Gone has the cheapest 3-fer.

I dig Green Street, a trio date with Ben Tucker-bass,and Dave Bailey- drums.I like the trio lineup for GG,gives him space to stretch out.

Excellent album. I love the choice of lineup on this one.

I'm a big fan of this one as well, which includes the vibes/organ combo...

Seamen, Orr and Goode, I know a bit... haven never heard of the others...

Can we iagine that the two album title influenced JMA and RYM is calling JH an avant-garde/free-jazz artiste, then??

I don't care what labels get attached to it, it's good jazz music. That's all that matters to me. And I'm always glad to hear another great alto player.

Miller's a good player, whom I saw with Woody Shaw long ago, and have a number of albums with him as a sideman. But, I've never thought to pick up any of his albums as a leader. Nelson and Wilson are always hip.

anyone else have or heard...Flugzeug Trio - My Imagination Runs Wild (2016)? it was released earlier this year and I think it's pretty sweet. they are a Jazz Fusion/Contemporary Jazz trio from Montreal featuring

    Julie Chapais - guitar
    Martin Gagné - sax
    Gonza Meza - drums
with four time Juno Award winning bassist Chris Tarry joining in for this album

from their BC page "Flugzeug Trio is a prog-jazz Montreal-based band. Since the very beginning of the project an incredible chemistry between all three members has been leading the band in the most natural way, setting things up for amazing discoveries. The bass-less trio performs originals, which can best be described as very melodic with insane dynamics. Most compositions are written by Chapais and often arranged collectively, Gagné joining his out of the box ideas to Meza’s unusual rhythms to create a truly inventive project."

very little on YT, so I made a couple of the first two tracks (apologies in advance for anyone offended by vids). I should prolly take em down soon anyways. if interested, you can purchase the CD at the Band Camp icon but digital copies will have to be bought elsewhere as far as I can tell. Microsoft has it. not sure about iTunes. hope ya like it...

This is my first approach to his music as a leader and it works for me!! :-)
    Tankx for the H.U.!.

    Neal Smith - drums
