Thanks for the link Jerjo. That Kamasi Washington album seems to have been pretty popular this year, though I don't have it. They had some music from it on YT or some other site. It sounded well enough, though I didn't know what to make of it really. It seems to have either elements of progressive jazz or fusion-y. If anyone picked it up, what did you think?

That Halvorson, Meltframe sounds like she's playing thru a Echoplex or something, over dubbing etc., but pretty interesting. I might have to pick it up at some time. I'll have to check out some of the other records they pick.

Did anyone pick up any of these picks?

It's been discussed in this thread and elsewhere. I listened to the whole thing on Apple Music and I'm not as enamored with it as many others seem to be. I do like that he pays homage to several jazz subgenres of yore and there's some good playing, but there's a lot of strings and choir on it that makes it sound bloated and cheesy, at least to me. But you should be your own judge, since most don't share my opinion and it seems to be wildly popular for a current jazz album.

Yeah, I get you, and that's what I kinda sorta thought too a little bit, but then I don't have the full album. But with just a cursory listen type thing, it didn't seem to be something I was all that interested in picking up--granted it might grow on you over time. Just seemed a little mainstream or something.

I have all but the Halverson new one and the Schneider, which I plan on getting.
Kamesi's album I like, but it is more of a "retro" mash-up of spiritual post-Trane stuff with fusion, funk, and soul jazz. A fun listen, but not groundbreaking. The Threadgill gets my vote for tops, along with Myra Melford's latest.....

A Facebook buddy is looking for feedback on the Necks box. Any thoughts on that?

Probably good albums I'm sure. As I've gotten older, it takes me longer and longer to form an opinion it seems. I don't know what's up with that. There's certainly things I enjoy hearing, but I have a tough time saying at least jazz-wise something is better than something else at times.

^ Not an expert but I thought they were more like Canturbury. From what I heard they reminded me a bit of Egg in the organ department.

One off trio w/ Jaco, Alphonse Mouzon, and the great German trombonist, Albert Mangelsdorff.

I've got a Mouzon album around here somewhere that I haven't listened to in a fairly long while. It's sort of funky and fuion-y as best as I remember. I should give it a spin.

Easily my fave '15 album in jazz along with Ibrahim Maalouf's Red & Black Light

Rhapsody is indeed his best (but maybe the only one that's essential as well), though I just found out it's not his last album...

    Anyone heard Birds Requiem?

That NPR list is way too US-oriented: no sign of Maalouf or Hamasyan (just to mention those two artistes, who put out two album each, all four worthy of a top 50)

Too bad she insists to have vinyl-only releases

Anyone else have any jazz rock suggestions? I'm familiar with Brand X, National Health, Weather Report, Holdsworth, Soft Machine, Stanley Clark, Tony Williams, etc. But go ahead and suggest anyway. At times for me the weirder, the better. Here's something I ran across:
