While looking/listening to the Mostly Other People Do the Killing at YT, I ran across Mulatu Astatke vid. Sort of ethno, jazzy, funky, some Herbie Hancock? But I like it.

^^^^ I don't know the Dollar Brand, and the Hemphill and Shepp LPs aren't my faves by them, but otherwise good stuff.

Which Hemphill & Shepp do you like? I'm only beginning to scratch the surface with this free jazz stuff.

I know you didn't ask me directly, but for Hemphill, Dogon A.D. is well regarded.

With Shepp, perhaps Fire Music or The Way Ahead.

Cozy--I know you didn't ask me directly,

I was asking anyone really, the more the merrier.

That's a lot of listen too. I'll give them a listen and see what I think. I did listen to that Jimmy Giuffre, Free Fall! last night and enjoyed it.

    Thanks for the recs.

    Shepp's The Way Ahead

Live In San Francisco is great as well.

And his reworkings of the Coltrane tunes are really inventive. It's no wonder Bob Thiele was on the the phone to Coltrane during that session.

I think I'll follow your advice, because I tried four early albums (apparently their Paris era) like Go Home, Chi-Congo, Jackson In Your House, Message to Our Folks .... And none resonated with me
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Check out "People In Sorrow". IMO, the groups magnum opus.

If you don't particularly dig the ones you listed, "PIS" might be a heavy lift; go with Bap-tizm (admittedly a personal fave, as I attended the performance).

Anybody into Ran Blake? I've never listened to his stuff, but I just ordered the Black Saint/Soul Note box. I bought it after listening to a couple tunes from Short Life Of Barbara Monk.
