Trumpet-bass-drums might not be the most inviting lineup, but these guys do it well.Evans has technique to burn,so much so that he can be somewhat.......exhausting.He can be a steamroller, at times just relentless, but always "musical".Very little sputtering and half-valve trumpet effects, just balls out energy and forward momentum.Hebert's bass and Kassa Overall's drums lend warmth, support and counterpoint, and keep the sound from being too spare(most of the time).

The trio cd "Zebulon" shows the group at the height of their power live, and this live clip is not quite up to the quality of the cd but gives a taste of what these men are up to.

I'm, not a huge trumpet fan, but boy could I listen to Peter Evans play anything for hours.

Just saw where Julian Priester is apparently touring his classic "Love, Love'" album this summer:

Weird. Hadn't heard anything about Priester in years. I'm not entirely sure I even knew he was still alive, and I certainly didn't know he was still performing.

A year or two ago there was a fund drive to raise money for Priester.Apparently he had health issues that were draining his finances.Glad to hear he's playing and touring.

    Wonderful player.

Just saw a great show by Satoko Fuji New Trio + 1 on Sunday.

I had seen her before, but only in a duet with her husband. This was with:
    Yoshi Shutto – Drums
    Todd Nicholson – Bass
    Kappa Maki – Trumpet

I don't know Yoshi, but he was a superstar. Todd was also totally solid.

    Good times!!

This explains why when I tuned in there was jazz playing when I expected not jazz. I think I'll tune back in.

    RIP Horace...

I knew a few musicians who'll be crying their eyes out, and surely will play a few tunes of yours at their next rehearsals...

Anyone in the VA-DC-MD area familiar with the sadly departed Pam Bricker? She was by far my primary go-to performer for live jazz. Her album Lookin' Good, with songs (and accompaniment) by Dave Frishberg, is happily part of my CD collection--especially Peel Me a Grape. It was great fun to see Pam at a smallish bar, as she would typically pass around a box of various percussion instruments so the audience could play along while enjoying some Brazilian grooves. Fond memories...

I did not know Pam had died. I knew her work a very, very long time ago (like 30 years)

^ Was that when she was doing the prog band Bricker? I remember mention of that, but never heard any of the music.

Been listening to Eddie Gale's first two albums in the late 60's

    Ghetto Music is absolutely spell-binding

I wish I could've been there at a time, because they put obn a show with full theaztrics about life in the ghetto

His second album, though quite good, is less convincing, but partly because the surprise is gone...

Anyways, rthanks to whomever for the recommendation

I didn't know she had a prog band. Now that's funny.

No, she did musical theater for a living at a time when an ex friend of mine did musical theater as well. This is circa 1979-81, iirc.

Beautiful use of space, intense groove. This is so bad ass. So absolutely joyous and infectious. This is their version of a tune that was in Basie's New Testament book for many years, Neal Hefti's "Li'l Darling"

Took me over 2 minutes to get into that one. He needs a different percussionist; one that knows what to play, when to play, and more importantly, when not to play. I'm surprised the bassist didn't smack him.

I'll play. Here is one of my favorite Fusion pieces. Yeah, some of it sounds like smooth Jazz, but wait for it. There are numerous groove, tempo and time signature changes on this.

  23. #473
This one is more of a jam, but has a few interesting twists and turns.

  24. #474
This one features our own Ernie Denov. I forget what his PE nickname is though.

Lo and behold, a little digging and...

Memory is hazy, but I think the CD shown at the end of this vid is one she had for sale when I bought Lookin' Good. We had a chat about which one I should choose, and Pam swayed me with Dave Frishberg's Schoolhouse Rock connection. There was a third CD, can't remember what. Hindsight is 20/20--shoulda bought 'em all!
