Although this album is nearly a year old, I just got hold of it last week - it's been spinning more or less continually since then. Maybe somewhat fancifully, I hear them as working in the musical space opened up by the duets of Coltrane & Elvin - & then Coltrane with Rashid Ali. The impact of the electronica in their last two releases has worked to open up their music in quite subtle ways, & is present more as an embellishment than a "third instrument".

Listening to Marcus Strickland’s Twi-Life-The Universe’s Wildest Dream. Digging it.

More archival good stuff from Jazz In Britain.Trevor Tomkin's groups from the early 80's.What interests me enough to spring for this is the presence of Jimmy Hastings in a "straight ahead" jazz setting.Hastings plays in most of these sessions, Brian Smith is the reedman on one session.

I've dipped my toes into another season of Bosch and, as usual, I discover a jazz artist I've never heard of. Horace Tapscott. Down the rabbit hole I go.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart

It's a good hole to go down.....

Horace is a huge figure in the SoCal scene. Check Out the Pan African People's Arkestra. And my fave of his, The Dark Tree.

    Also, love me some Bosch.

    Gang:

"In the finest tradition of BBE Music’s J Jazz Masterclass Series, we have a real obscurity of quality to savour. Taken from the rare 1978 private press album ‘Introducing’ by the Hideyasu Terakawa Quartet featuring Hiroshi Fujii, this private press gig recording was originally released in less than 100 copies. This BBE Music edition is the first time this very rare album has ever been reissued."

According to Fujii: "a special label, Red Horison, released only this one album and it was sold at a few local record stores and available for sale when we played live. After this live recording, I did not perform with Terakawa again.”

    Next, a nice collection:

"Announcing ZZAJ: Jazz from the 23rd Century, a Collection of New Jazz, Fusion, Rock, Pop, and Experimental Music that Explores the Questions: What is Jazz and where is it going?"

"ZZAJ: Jazz from the 23rd Century, is a thrilling new collection of music featuring 34 new songs – all previously unreleased – from artists from all over the world. The brainchild of producers/multi-instrumentalists Jerry King (Cloud Over Jupiter, Moon X, John Shirley & Jerry King) and Dave Newhouse (The Muffins, Manna Mirage, Moon x), ZZAJ asked musicians to interpret jazz from various conceptual viewpoints, particularly avoiding traditional jazz sounds."
    Pura Vida!.

A new book on Neil Ardley (plus two CDs exclusive to it) has just been put on sale by Jazz in Britain. It looks good. The CDs are from Ardley’s archive; one comprising his electronic work and the other a 1965 recording with the Danish Radio band. The book, written by his wife Viv, is a hardback with 424 pages. Only 500 books are being printed, apparently.

While on the JiB site, take a look at the Splinters album called Inclusivity. It sells for only £10 (plus £6 postage in the UK) but for that you get three well-recorded CDs from two 1972 concerts plus a well-presented book with liner notes written by Simon Spillett. Admittedly the music is not easy listening – as you would imagine with John Stevens, Trevor Watts and Jeff Clyne in tow – but as an historical record of the times it is excellent. Stan Tracey, Tubby Hayes, Kenny Wheeler and Phil Semen also feature. JiB produced 600 copies of this album; optimistic to say the least and hence the fire sale. On the other hand, they are only printing 500 copies of the Ardley book, which I would think is too cautious. But who am I to judge?

This sounds like it may be interesting, doesn't come out until April. Belgian kraut crossover jazz (apparently)

Definitely going to have to check this one out, Ian!!! (terrible name for a band, btw )

Meanwhile, listening to this yesterday night:

Possibly not one of Shorter's best known records - but one of my favourites, mostly because of the two long cuts on side 2 - of which this is the first. In some ways, it sounds to me quite close to the kinds of tracks Coltrane was making around 1961-3, & this may be why I like it so much. The whole band has a groove that's just locked in.

Love this - Benoit Widemann (of Magma fame)

    Bass – Dominique Bertram
    Drums – François Laizeau
    Keyboards – Benoît Widemann

Reminds me somewhat of Elvin Jones...
