    Zappa covers thread

Frank Zappa must be one of the most-covered artists to have worked in our genre - maybe more than any other? I don't think it's surprising that his compositions have fascinated many musicians, and over the years I've accumulated a few albums by other artists devoted to his music. Anyway, I thought it might be fun to have a thread where people post versions they like.

I'll kick off with this from the Omnibus Wind Ensemble:

I picked this up on CD years ago during my time as a hi-fi nut. It's on Opus 3, which was a Swedish audiophile label (but one that actually put out good music, not just good-sounding music). A great recording all round.

Let's not forget this version of G-Spot Tornado by the Ensemble Modern, recorded on the Yellow Shark. Probably the last time Zappa was ever on stage for anything (conducting here). (the song ends at 3:35)

And one of our favorite keyboardists, Rachel Flowers, did some Zappa covers. Here she is on stage with ZPZ playing Evelyn, A Modified Dog.

Here's her version of Inca Roads where she played all the instruments.

If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.

Zappa usually covers when the spread is 2 1/2 or less, as he gets up for the big games. However, he doesn't cover well when the spread is over 7. He's probably either overconfident or overmatched in those games. In those cases, just bet the over.

Let's have something a little...different...from Eugene Chadbourne and Camper Van Beethoven:

One of the first Zappa-covers I heard was Babe Ruth's version of King Kong on First Base:

I'm sure "King Kong" got covered so much because the lead sheet was included in the Uncle Meat album booklet. (So was the title track, but that one's a bit harder.)
