I'm not sure how much awareness there is in the US of The Avengers having already been on in the UK for a few years. It was a videotape series then; little of the first series survived (although a few episodes have been found in this century) but all of the following two survived.

Diana Rigg's appointment (and she actually hadn't been the first to be filmed in the role of Emma Peel) saw the show move to film, though. I believe it's still one of relatively few UK series ever to get a serious foothold in the US market. I got into it in the mid 2000s and loved it. The first B&W series of the show she was in was the peak for sure, I'd say.

She was the best 'Bond girl' ever as well, IMHO.

I have the full Avengers set on VHS still, one of the few remaining VHS collections I still have.

This one has hit my wife hard, she is a big Dame Diana fan.

I loved her in The Avengers, but really got a 15 year old's crush on her when she played James Bond's wife in On Her Majesties Secret Service. A great actress who had lots of energy and spunk, and highly talented. I hope she's resting in peace.

Life-long fan, such a loss. I particularly liked her portrayal of Veronica, the mother of Becky in the brilliantly understated British comedy Detectorists. The performance was not too much of a stretch as Becky was played by her actual daughter Rachel Stirling.

According to her obit in the Washington Post, :
her character’s very name was said to derive from a studio executive’s recommendation that Macnee’s female assistant should have “man appeal” or “M appeal” — thus, “Emma Peel.”

I am surprised no mention of her role in "Game Of Thrones". She was great in that in her old age.

I remember her from those Avengers reruns that aired on A&E during the early '90s, as well as the mini-series she did (1991, thereabouts) with David McCallum. RIP.

    I only now learned this!

Dame Rigg is best-remembered by myself in:

    Mother Love

    Danvers in Rebecca

    In This House Of Brede

The Hothouse episode of Armchair Theatre '64

    Lady Dedlock , Bleak House

Mrs Bradley Mysteries (only 5 episodes but quite good)

    Little Eyolf

    Host for Mystery

Looking forward to the remake of the classic, Black Narcissus.

And, yes, Stupifying Jones fills out a cat suit much better. And...Linda Thorson...phoar!!

Yep. I was responding to a post saying that Diana was best filling out a catsuit. My post was a gentle disagreement, hence the "Ahem." The Newmar pic was my nomination for best catsuit.

My best memories of her are from Theater of Blood (a fun film, with a great score by Michael J. Lewis). Her above-mentioned role in Detectorists was another great one. A brilliant series, indeed, that one. One of my favourite moments was the final episode parody of the "barn-building" scene from The Witness, which even parodied the scene's music with just the suitably eighties-sounding synths.
