Are you on the PE home screen when it asks you to log in on the upper right? If so, ignore it and click on one of the forum headings. When it displays, you'll see that you're already logged in.

For as long as I remember, I go to the address bar and type "pr" and the browser auto-fills the URL as "http://www.progressiveears.org/forum/forum.php", I press Enter, and I'm at the site, not logged in. Then I hit "New Posts" and I'm at the New Posts page, logged in. If I use a tablet, I have to tell it to use Desktop Site once I arrive. If I use a phone, I can't see jack squat, so I don't use a phone.

If you haven't cleared browser history in a while, might give that a try too. At some point a while ago the URL changed slightly but about half the time I tried typing "progressiveears" into my browser it grabbed the cached/wrong version.

If you have a bookmark make sure it points to https://www.progressiveears.org/forum/forum.php?
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

Yes, this seems to be the most effective way around this bugaboo.
Please don't ask questions, just use google.

It has been that way for a long time. It just appears as if one needs to log in each time based on the wording in the upper right of the screen. But that's not actually required, unless you have been inactive for an extended time on the PE site (I believe this is the case, but please correct me if I'm in error here).

I think this is the problem. If you access the older, non-secure version through http this is what happens. You should make sure to use the new secure version through https via the link that battema posted. The admins could perhaps look into automatically forwarding http to https to avoid this kind of problem. I'm not an expert, but I don't think that's too difficult to implement.

Udi, same here for some time, but like others noted, if I just click on the forum I am in, no problem.

Well I'll be jiggered. I've noticed this minor annoyance for months and all it took to fix it was sticking that "s" in the bookmark.

Yes...I learned about this months ago here......maybe it was in the "Site Issues" section of PE.

Before I figured it out they would send you a new password that was so stupidly difficult and it would never work.

Still does not work for me even as a member, really a major pain in the ass, to have to log in EVERY SINGLE TIME! Prevents lots of replies however so that is probably good for the rest of you guys.

Yeah, the same for me....the opening page has no clue who I am but click on a thread and there is my name happily at the top of the page.

And now, having had to update my password, it no longer lets me in again no matter my url and I have to log in each time. Sigh.

I love the discussions but the forum technology is old AF. Vbulletin is up to 5.6 while this forum runs on 4.2.

Sorry I didn't see this thread before (Thanks, Cozy, for bringing it to my attention).

Auto-logon works 100% perfectly for me, and has never stopped working. I can't remember when I last entered my user-ID or password.

The problems you're experiencing are not a function of our software. But there's one thing I will do - I'll get the ISP to auto-forward anyone who goes to http://www.progressiveears.org - to https://www.progressiveears.org. Y'all clamored for that "s" security encryption. We bought it, we installed it.

Here are a few nuggets of advice that should help:

Advice #1 : Enter this link into your browser's bookmarks, and then always use that bookmark to get into PE.

    https://www.progressiveears.org/forum/forum.php

Advice #2 : Clear your browser's cookies and PE history.

You don't need to clear all history or cookies - just the PE ones. If you don't know how to do that, please Google how to do it for your browser. When I have time tomorrow, I'll post instructions on how to do that for Firefox, Chrome, and IE (now called Microsoft Edge) - BUT details will vary depending on your platform and your version of the software, so use my instructions as a general guideline only. I don't use Macs or iOS, so please Google how to clear history and cookies on Safari or any other browser.

Advice #3 : When you log in, be sure that BEFORE hitting enter or clicking the login button, you check the "Remember Me" box.

That instructs our system to remember your user-ID and password.

    Advice #4 : Allow cookies.

Whatever browser you're using will have an option to allow or to disallow cookies. Your user-ID and password are remembered in cookies, and if you've disallowed them, PE will honor your instructions to ignore cookies, and will not store your user-ID and password.

Advice #5 : Manage your browser's password storage.

All (I think) browsers have an option to store user IDs and passwords - or to not store them.

Every browser does this differently, so explore your browser's options, advanced-options, or password manager, whatever ... and see if (a) password storage has been allowed or disabled, (b) if PE specifically has been enabled or disallowed, and (c) if the user-ID and password stored in that facility for PE are current..

Advice #6 : Check your anti-virus, firewall software.

Examine your Norton, McAfee, Avast, Malwarebytes, Kaspersky, Zone Alerm, Komodo ... whatever over-zealous protection software you're using, and ensure it does not block cookies, browser history, password retention, or PE specifically.

    Advice #7 : Last-resort - use a password manager.

If all of the above fails, then try LastPass, Dashlane, 1Password, or similar products. They have the ability to override all "native" PC protections, and remember - and automatically enter - user-IDs and passwords.

It's probably a good idea to get these systems anyway. IMHO they are just as important as anti virus tools. (Thank me later.)

After purchasing vBulletin releases 2, 3, 4, and 4.x.x, you had free upgrades. vBulletin 5 and beyond need to be purchased afresh. But the cost isn't the problem:

    - There are HUGE changes between release 4.x.x and release 5, and it would take me at several days of dedicated time to complete those upgrades.

    - The user-interface changes: As we learned when we upgraded from PEv2 to PEv3, PE members are severely opposed to change, and I guarantee, we would have howls of protest and people leaving - just as we did the last time. I'm not sure I care about that. This is a modern, technological world - get with the program ... but like in 2012, it would take me hundreds of hours to hold peoples' hands through the countless "how do I...: questions.

Now if I could just hit the lottery and not work for my meager living, that would be easy!
