I also had a chat with Dug Pinnick, bassist/vocalist for King's X. He arrives about 43 minutes into the vid. Before that I chat with my friend, co-host vocalist Jake Livgren (from Proto Kaw, the Kansas offshoot), about the music he's been part of lately. In particular, the new album from The Legacy Pilots, and the single, "Dreamers". Marco Minnemann is on drums for that one too. Vid is below. Dug drops in and discusses the forthcoming King's X album, which is their first in over ten years. Also, early influences vocally and on bass. Some overlooked songs in the catalog. Where he got the inspiration to use 8 and 12 string basses. Thoughts on how to maintain your voice over the years and much more! This was one of the most inspiring chats I've had yet, I think. Dug could easily be a preacher or a motivational speaker, and really, is anyway....

For Episode #37 of SOAL Night Live we discuss his years with Yes including a look at the making of albums like Drama, Fly From Here, FFH Return Trip and Heaven and Earth. The current Yes album in the works is covered a bit towards the end too. They are swapping demos back and forth for it. It's still in the early stages so there isn't much to share about it yet. Also, we chat about the evolution of keyboards and synths and his use of many of them. His time with Trevor Horn in the Buggles comes up including the genesis of the 80s defining hit, "Video Killed The Radio Star" and where the band's name came from too. Geoff looks back on his favorite Yes songs to play on stage and memories of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame evening. We take a brief look at Asia too.
Here's Episode #38. I talk about progressive rock quite a bit on this show. I'd say about half of my audience are not really prog fans though (yet, anyway) so I thought a show about what this "prog" I often speak of was in order. I just happened to be friends with a guy (and fellow PE member) that wrote one of the definitive books on it, Charles Snider. He wrote the Strawberry Bricks Guide to Progressive Rock about 15 years ago and recently expanded and updated it. We talk about our first prog albums/tunes we remembered hearing and then try to explain what prog is about. After that, around the 23 minute mark, Charles breaks out a visual presentation of 67 albums that helped define what we call progressive rock. From 1967 to roughly 1980. We are planning another show to talk about all the great prog music that has been made from the 80s on up to present day soon! Stay tuned

I disagree with his drawing the line at progressive albums at 1967. If you are talking progressive rock, perhaps you can’t really draw a line. To have the Nice as the first progressive album and at the same time exclude Sgt Peppers is a contradiction. IMO 1969’s KC Crimson King is the first, but numbered 8, which is inconsistent. If one wanted to include a pre-Prog group numbered i, ii, ....iv, that would be more appropriate.
All comments on music in this interview were awesome. Especially on the first 2 Yes albums, for which I love the jazzy aspect and fans don’t seem to appreciate. These should be included in the pre-Prog group.
Caught up with Trey today and asked him about everything you could probably think of. Got up to date on his latest musical doings (coaching musicians with a special course, going through years of cassettes of his musical doings going all the way back to the 80s and his earliest recordings/writings, finishing a transcription book of all three 80s Crimson albums with standard notation and tablature). Also, we discuss his early inspirations and the road that led him to Crimson. We discuss UKZ and Security Project too....
For Episode #39 we chat with the former King Crimson touch guitarist about his current musical projects and his proggy past. We take a look at his early years on bass and guitar and eventual trek through Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft courses. His move to Chapman Stick and eventual use of the Warr touch guitar he is so well known for and the differences between them all. His work with Fripp and David Sylvian is mentioned along with Sunday All Over The World with Fripp and his wife, vocalist Toyah Wilcox. How he eventually got the call to be in King Crimson's mid 90s resurrection and details on the making of the album Thrak. Discussions about the disbanding of the Thrak era "double trio" and the era of Projekcts that followed. Trey shares his thoughts on what made each unique and the fruit bore. Talk turns to the next era of Crimson, resurfacing as a quartet with Gunn, Fripp, Adrian Belew and Pat Mastelotto. How the ConstrKction of Light album was conceived and a look the creation at various compositions on it- the title track, Lark's Tongues IV and FracKctured. Discussions of the tour and reimagined version on a recent boxed set, The ReConstruKction of Light. A look at the follow up album, The Power To Believe and the creation of certain compositions like Level Five, ElectKctric and Dangerous Curves.
I caught up with Jim Babjak from The Smithereens today. One of my fave 80s bands from the MTV era. They always had catchy tunes with a bit of attitude. Sort of like if REM had balls and a singer that wasn't whiney.We chat about guitars, early influences, making vids for MTV, guesting on Saturday Night Live, and take a look at each of their albums too. You might remember hits like "Blood and Roses", "Behind The Wall of Sleep", "Only a Memory" and "A Girl Like You", to name a few....

He's got a new album called ReImaginos, which is a reworking/recording of the legendary BOC album Imaginos. We dig into the making of that and it's vids and how it differs from the original BOC version. Also, we chat about early influences, concerts, the evolution of drum micing at concerts, and of course, how cowbell wound up on their classic "Don't Fear The Reaper". A cowbell that spawned a pop culture catch phrase that will live FOREVER. Would you believe it almost was....triangle instead?! Also, Albert guests on the new BOC album The Symbol Remains. We'll discuss how that came to be. My co-host this week is my friend Rob Dwyer.

For Episode 43 we catch up Steve Babb (bass) and Fred Schendel (keys) from the modern progressive rock group Glass Hammer, out of Chattanooga, TN. We get up to date on the latest album, which is a reworking of songs from their 90s albums. Updated and refreshed. We also chat about their most recent album and it's making, Dreaming City. Chat about prog festivals on land and sea, early concerts and prog faves, the nature of online prog fandom, the advances in recording since the 90s, and talk of what they have been listening to for enjoyment comes up too. Also, how they came to work with both Yes front men, Jon Anderson and Jon Davidson and have them appear on some of their albums.

Listened to end of the Glass Hammer interview and a mention of the Yes (I think they said 45th in 2005) 35th anniversary show. I didn’t see that “inflatables” show live, but it was captured on video and has aired many times on AXS. The video is excellent.

Each album's musical and lyrical directions, cover art, and more are discussed in depth. A close look at certain tracks from each album is included too, shedding much light on their creation and meaning.

Thanks, Sean. I switched around albums with the timestamp. Lots of great history of the origins of the music and the artwork. Mei is my favourite. I would like to see the band live again (saw them at FMPM and said hello).
