That's got to be interesting for Derek. I mean, his primary career was as a Big Time Music Biz executive, and he's famous as the man who discovered Bon Jovi. Gentle Giant was just something he did when he was young and stupid and didn't know how the real world worked. And to be remembered for that, and not his real job?

That was a great interview. I agree with what Pete said about Freehand, definitely their most easier to listen to without being dumbed down. I'd forgotten about their association with Tull too, I've often thought there are quite a few parts of Songs from the Wood that remind me of GG.

Thanks. Nice interview. I think Derek's still really proud of his GG days. His enthusiasm showed. I got a kick out of his New York accent. He must have lived there for a long time!

Wicked!! I would have been all over the box five years ago but priorities have changed.

Not to hijack with my own interview, people are free to read it or not - I just thought I'd mention that when I spoke to Derek last November, he also mentioned Inside Out (and Civilian) then, without my prompting. We went through several albums, actually. This was shortly before the box was released.

Continuing my exploration of that last 3 albums (which I'd never heard before) I listened to Giant For A Day. Meh, but Spooky Boogie is pretty good. The album isn't horrible but just kinda generic, yacht rocky rock.

^^^ Yeah yacht rocky is my take on GFAD also. I agree it is not bad in that vein. If they wanted to stay commercial yacht rock was probably the way to go for them rather than punk/new wave... ie. "Betcha Thought We Couldn't Do It". I certainly thought they *could* in fact do it. Just didn't believe they would want to...

And I just heard all of Civilian. It's probably the best of the 3. It's ok. Kinda rocks a little harder than the 2 previous. The worst of the three would be GFAD I think.

That and "Friends" are the only tracks on the album that I really like. And "Friends" is probably the least Gentle Gianty thing they ever recorded.
New album THE HIPCRIME VOCAB available now!

I like "Thank You" a lot, and it's in the same vein lyrically. And "Words from the Wise" is basically a Kansas song, but a good one.

It's "Carry On Wayward Son" minus the cool guitar riff.

I needed to cleanse my pallet. Now playing: In A Glass House.

It's my favorite GG album. I have the CD. Playing it right now. Followed by Acquiring The Taste and Octopus. The cream of their output.

The Power And The Glory's is Derek's favourite. It was the first I bought as a teenager back in the day and my fav too.

I guess I'm going backward in their discography. NP: In'terview. It's their most insane album imo.

It's under-rated, I find. My favourite. The most accomplished.

Good interview but nothing to get excited about, it's not a GG reunion!

But one has to have realistic expectations. That would never happen.

And I never thought something like this would - so it's a big plus!
