His first couple years of singles are untouchable. I play them shockingly frequently.

It's hard to think of a better pure rock and roll singer.

What a legend. And such a personality too! Along with the classics he had in the early days of rock n roll, I always loved this song that he had a hit with in the mid-'80s - he co-wrote it with Billy Preston and it was featured in the movie Down and Out in Beverly Hills (Little Richard also played a great role in the movie as 'Orvis Goodnight'):

    R.I.P.

I stumbled in a bar on the Daytona beach strip in February 1980 and got a private performance by Tutti Frutti.

It was right out of a David Lynch movie.

Rest in peace, Little Richard. One of my all-time favorite rock and roll artists.

What I wouldn't have given to have been there to see the expression on the collective face of white America when first it laid eyes on this particular specimen of humanity! RIP.....

High School- spring break 1980 -I left my beach Motel to grab a beer in the first place on the strip.

Besides the bartender, I was the only one there until Little Richard started playing in the corner of this little dive bar.

He had his organ under a preacher podium, with a garish red a green light oscillating overhead.

There was no cover charge and I left after a few tunes.

I never thought about it again until his brief reemergence in the early 90s.

In 1980, Little Richard was the last musical artist on anyone's mind.....I guess.

    WOW. It was really him?
    That's amazing and quite sad.

...as was the case even in the more proximate 60s. For those of us with limited historical consciousness, LR and his 50s colleagues were paleo-relics with little more credibility than goofball shlocksters Sha Na Na. I saw Chuck Berry open for the Byrds in 1970 and most in the audience--including myself--barely noticed.

Little Richard was the first glam rock and roller, to boot. I read in one of his biographies that in one show in the 50s he came out on stage wearing a jacket studded with little mirrors. When the spot light hit him, he was like a walking disco ball. And this was decades before Slade did similar things with mirrors on apparel.

Looking forward to my day in court.

I hear Richard's autobiography is quite a read.

The first Little Richard hit I remember hearing was "Lucille." She won't do her sister's will.
