I always thought that the 60s stuff must have been a big inspiration to him. Especially the Doors.

    RIP.

It's funny, but Burnel had the same opinion when they started playing together for the first time. Apparently Greenfield hadn't even listened to the Doors at the time - but he was a confirmed Wakeman fan.

I always thought that Hugh Cornwell sounded like Jim Morrison at times too...

I saw The Stranglers at The Rainbow in July 8th, 1980, "The Raven" tour, me a very young boy on a study-holiday (didn't open a book), loved them since then, a concert I will never forget.

In memory of Dave Greenfield I've just finished listening to all seventeen Stranglers studio releases along with associated b-sides. I was introduced to The Stranglers in 1980 and I doubt that they would have grabbed my attention at that time if it wasn't for the presence of Dave Greenfield's keyboards. I get so much enjoyment from his playing through all of the incarnations of the band and, while their catalog is a testament to Dave's abilities as a player, writer and sometime vocalist, it's sad to think that there won't be any more opportunities to see him live or hear his contributions to Stranglers compositions. There is a very nice melancholic synth solo towards the end of 'My Fickle Resolve' from the Giants album that particularly caught my attention and seemed to complement my mood.

Shortly before Greenfield died, I went through all the Stranglers albums. There are quite a few gems in those latter day albums.

I think they had been putting together material for a new studio album (if I'm remembering their Facebook posts correctly). And, as you say, they were still touring extensively. I'm kicking myself for not seeing them last year in the States when they were here.

So it is not something Dave Brubeck ever has played.

That Brubeck mash-up is pretty rad and pretty darn convincing.

I like how Greenfield is the only one playing it straight in that Dutch tv clip.

TopPop was a weekly pop-show in which bands could play back on their hits. Some took it very seriously (UK's Rendezvous 6:02), while others made it into party (Sting with The Police eating a banana). When the band couldn't come to the show Penney de Jager and her dancing-crew did a "ballet". (B.t.w. Penney was Rick van der Linden's wife).

I saw this on FB today - from The stranglers:

"Full Final UK Tour And Album Update

Dave’s death has been an absolute tragedy and mere words cannot describe our deep sense of loss and the sheer, raw emotion that we have felt over the past month. Dave was our dear friend and band mate and we will miss him forever. The loss has had an absolutely devastating effect on us as a band and we’ve spent a lot of time in reflection and discussing the future. We had all been working on recording a new album, much of which is ready to mix. Dave was, of course, an integral part of our work on this new material and, therefore, we fully intend to bring the project to fruition as soon as we can get back together.

We have also been thinking of you, our fans. We have read the many posts and messages with regard to the Final Full Tour and, after much discussion, we have decided to proceed with the shows in Dave’s honour. Dave was very much looking forward to this being our final, full outing so we believe it’s the most suitably fitting way for all of us together to say goodbye.

    JJ, Baz and Jim."

Update posted from Greenfield's widow posted on The Stranglers' FB page:

    To the FamilyInBlack:

Pam here, I’d like to share a couple of things with you...

In January, Dave went into the studio to play on a track with Hung Like Hanratty. He first heard them at The Great British Music Festival in Skegness (at my insistence), I had seen them the year before & thought they were great. Obviously, he thought they were brilliant. Over the last few years we’ve seen them many times & have become good friends. So Dave was “chuffed” when asked if he would play on a track on their new album. It was a great day in the studio, he had a terrific time as did I and HLH. I will always remember that day. On 15 August, this CD will be released. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do and I know Dave would. So, it would be great to share this with you - HLH and Dave having a lot of fun.

Next, HLH have written a song for Dave, it’s called “Fly High With the Ravens”. It will be released on 31 October as a very limited edition vinyl. I know he would love it, written from the heart. The B-side is a track from the album, “Living for the Weekend”, which has keyboards from Dave. Monies from this will go to the charity of my choice which is MVT (Music Venue Trust) to help the pubs and clubs struggling in these hard times. We can’t lose them.
Many thanks to Hung Like Hanratty for great times and sharing your music with Dave, me and his many fans!
Here’s the link to order either (both?) the CD or the tribute vinyl:

"School Mam" contains some of the grittiest bass work I'm aware of. The very level of fierce fury in that tune as it develops is simply menacing, and that bass just gets ever more threatening.

I'm listening to The Raven now, and I recall how it got to be my fave Stranglers record. This is simply so deranged yet still sophisticated in detail and aura, although almost endlessly depressing. "Duchess" obviously breaks pattern but only succeeds in confirming conventions of mood.

I saw them on a very cold February night in 78 . It was a secret gig at clouds in Edinburgh. The support was the Skids. Was my first ever small Gig . I was going to concert hall stuff but was only 16 so too young for pub scene. Funny I was At knebworth watching Genesis round that time too so had eclectic tastes even back then. I knew I needed to be in a band

The Stranglers were the ultimate pub band and the original 4 lineup were the signature sound . They were incredible that night and I could have touched JJ as the stage was level and no security and we were all pogoing a foot from the monitors
Me and pal Ronnie Corbett were lifted by police for loitering that night as we missed last train home to hear the encore . They were not happy when they asked Ronnie his name. Thought he was being a bit wide.
Heres a link to a website that mentions that very gig on the 10th feb.

I should imagine Ronnie Corbett will mean nothing to anyone outside the UK.

'Wide' even less outside of Scotland!

Who were huge back in 78.
Going by the instrument swapping malarky above.
I would imagine Dave and the guys would have secretly been into them though.

To add .. for anyone who doubts the credentials of the Stranglers and hasn't seen it. Look up the video of "Nice N Sleazy" performance at Battersea park in 78. Art porn ? Just Porn Perhaps? But Dave's solo is off the chain and the Bass sound pure Tetnus .
