Upon reflection, the Sorey/Curtis duo cd has some aspects of jazz;namely the call and response and improvisational feel of some of the music therein.IMO.

I blame Wynton, what was the question?
There are only 10 types of people in the World, those who understand binary and those that don't.
My top 3 so far would be Birds of Passage by Karfagen (this band was previously unknown to me), Love Over Fear by Pendragon and Katatoni'a City Burials.
Just checked out Pure Reason Revolution - Eupnea, Yeah, this is the real thing. Great music.

^ Wow, is Fiona Apple still going? I thought there was some serious setback with her, but I might confuse it with something else. I'll have to hear this new one.
Seriously talented lady.

Just want to pop in here and say that I love these threads. They give me the opportunity to be introduced to music that might have not ended up on my radar otherwise. Thanks to all who contribute.

I've listened to enough to get a bona fide top 15 ranking so far (mixing all styles):
Tier 1
1. Aka Moon - Opus 111 (Best album in a while, combining Cassol's arrangement style and classical music with Aka Moon jazzy goodness)
2. Archive - 25 Live (this was a limited download only release, but a really great set)
3. Pure Reason Revolution - Eupnea (another nice entry in their catalog, very happy to seem them back at it)
4. Aksak Maboul - Figures (Wow, fantastic blend of Stereolab + Canterbury whimsy + avant progressions)
Tier 2
5. Tame Impala - The Slow Rush (Maybe their best. Keys-heavy, pop-dream psych with very deliberate call backs to late 70s/80s)
6. Elder - Omens (Their best, most proggy, and most diverse so far?)
7. Joel Harrison + 18 - America at War (Really well composed big band jazz in a modern style, with compositions often very different from each other)
8. Ghost Rhythms - Imaginary Mountains (Always good material from these guys. It's a work in progress, so who knows where it will end up?)
9. Pat Metheny - From This Place (another fantastic work from Pat who has really hit his stride)
Tier 3
10. Mythic Sunship - Changing Shapes (From El Paraiso, heavy psych rock with sax and a free-rock/jazz element)
11. Siena Root - The Secret of Our Time (Good old fashioned 70s retro-rawk. This one really stands out from their last few)
12. Zopp - s/t (Canterbury that grows on you. Not a classic, but not bad)
13. Kanaan - Odense Sessions (instrumental psych, post-rock, hard rocks stuff from the El Paraiso label)
14. King Buffalo - Dead Star (psych, space, rock, synth, fun)
15. Moura - s/t (From Spain, they sort of remind me of Big Elf, sort of a bombastic, organ/guitar hard prog with a whiff of Spinal Tap)

I see Steve Wynn is still in charge. Can't believe it's been 28 years since I saw them at the Roskilde festival in Denmark. They were on fire although already considered a "veteran" act! I remember Wynn's improvised rant of elegy about having to listen to Def Leppard or M.C. Hammer once he turned on the radio. If he'd only known what would be waiting a few decades down the line.
Oldtimer r&r is the thing for sure.
