Which version do you like best? I think it's a great song, and it's interesting to hear different interpretations.

I'll STILL take Santo & Johnny.
"My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician, and to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference"

I've never liked the song itself all that much, but the California Guitar Trio did a pretty decent job of it. Satch too.
The Joe Satriani version is very cool, and that very familiar guitar part (the highlight of the song) is done by none other than Robert Fripp! The original version is way cool too.
Great piece!! ...liked the tonal quality and pacing of the Shadows version a lot, (maybe 'cause it's the one i heard most as a kid). Los Straitjackets have done a good job w/ it, Les Paul too, (but way different). A couple of years back a guy at Sacramento's In the Flow Festival did an amazing (loud) version pushing the horn of his Telecaster in lieu of a whammy bar... a real tear jerker, but it wasn't sappy and had big Sharrock Last Exit level crushing power and weirdness.
I like the Ultravox version, too.
The original. Al Kooper did a cool version on his Soul Of A Man Live album from 95, covering the pedal steel on keys.
Danny Gatton's version is killer!!!

Larry Carlton's version from his 1982 Sleepwalk album is a great one.
Below is a video clip of Carlton doing Sleepwalk with Johnny Farina (The younger brother of the Santo & Johnny duo).
I was at one of the performances that went into that live CD. It was Al's 50th Birthday Celebration in Feb 1994, with The Rekooperators, The original Blues Project (sans Tommy Flanders of course), and most of the original BS&T, and The Rock Bottom Remainders. They did three nights at The Bottom Line. Footnote: Al replaced Steve Katz's guitar on the CD because Steve wouldn't sign a contract.
Brian Setzer does a great classic version
