Seeing as Mahavishnu has been mentioned anyway, I just listened to this and thought of the thread: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hNxW1sRWbE (Narada Michael Walden caning the intro on All In The Family).

Listening to this was one of the better six minutes I have spent.

In the court of the crimson king-King Crimson

    Living after midnight-Judas Priest

Here's a really great one that I don't think has been mentioned yet: one word by Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Let's not forget the great Pierre Moerlen. I love his drum intro to Crosscurrents, from Downwind album.
Next I remember Jon Hiseman - Major Keys

Middle Of The Road by The Pretenders gets my nod. If anyone said it yet I missed it...

Not one of the best, but this exactly intro scared the living $#!% of of me when listened to for the first time at full volume on a respectable audio system.

Now you can try it yourself, but you've been warned!

Oooh yes, how could I forget Spring Song? And yeah, I remember when I did a guest spot on a college radio show about 13 years ago, that was one of the songs I played, and I had to warn the DJ, "Don't pot up the intro, trust me, when the band comes in, and it'll be loud enough". When I play it on my show now, I typically fade it in a few seconds before the first chordal stab, so as nobody listening goes "What the hell? Why is it so quiet?".
