    RIP Hal Willner

Another victim of coronavirus at age 64. I first became aware of him with this great and weird avant garde tribute to Charles Mingus:

    Rest in peace.
We're trying to build a monument to show that we were here
It won't be visible through the air
And there won't be any shade to cool the monument to prove that we were here. - Gene Parsons, 1973

I only had the Monk tribute album (not sure where it disappeared to), but it was very cool. He was also responsible for the Night Music show with David Sanborn, which was awesome. Eclecticism at a level we'll never see on network TV again. Here's a web page that might keep you busy for awhile, if you liked the show:

RIP. The Night Music programming was fantastic.
    Weird Nightmare indeed.

One of the albums I have which features the production of Willner is Mark Bingham's I Passed For Human with this odd cover of Giant Steps:

Another track on that one is Delta Sierra:

Also in my collection is Willner's production of Laurie Anderson's Life On A String:

I've been a fan since his Nino Rota, Monk, and Kurt Weill tributes in the early Eighties.

What a shame. This one hurts.

A tribute to Hal that ran Saturday night on SNL:

I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
